Joe Rogan Again Had the No. 1 Podcast on Spotify for 2024
Joe Rogan no longer had an exclusive window on Spotify in 2024 — but his hugely popular podcast was still the No. 1 most-listened to show on the platform this year.
“The Joe Rogan Experience,” hosted by the comedian-podcaster, was the top Spotify podcast in the U.S. for the fourth year running, based on the company’s ranking of shows by unique users who listened to at least two minutes (or at least 50%) of an episode. In early 2024, Spotify relinquished platform exclusivity for Rogan’s podcast while cutting a multiyear distribution and ad-sales pact with him.

Similarly, Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” held the No. 2 spot on Spotify even though it, too, lost its exclusivity this year on the platform (and Cooper inked a massive distribution and ad deal with SiriusXM).
Both Rogan and Cooper’s podcasts played a part in the 2024 U.S. presidential election. Donald Trump appeared on the Oct. 25 episode of Rogan’s show, as part of his campaign’s strategy to court online influencers popular with young men. Democratic VP Kamala Harris sat for an interview with Cooper on “Call Her Daddy” in early October — and her campaign claimed she also had been willing to record an episode with Rogan at his Austin studio, but that scheduling didn’t work out.
Spotify released the list of the top 50 podcasts in the U.S. as part of Spotify Wrapped 2024, its annual year-in-review marketing event. Rounding out the top 10 were: “This Past Weekend” with Theo Von (on which Trump also made an appearance); “Crime Junkie”; the New York Times’ “The Daily”; “The Tucker Carlson Show”; “Huberman Lab”; “Armchair Expert” with Dax Shepard; “Smosh Reads Reddit Stories”; and the “Shawn Ryan Show.” (See the full list of Spotify’s top 50 podcasts for 2024 below.)
Increasingly, Spotify’s podcasts are available as video episodes. In 2024 more than one-third of the top 50 podcasts were video podcasts on Spotify, compared with only 1 in 7 in 2023. Spotify hosts more than 300,000 video podcasts out of more than 6 million podcasts in total; to date, over 240 million users have streamed a video podcast on the service.
As part of Spotify Wrapped 2024, the company is debuting the first iteration of Your Podcast Clips, which will show fans end-of-year messages from some of their favorite podcast creators. There’s also a “2024 in Podcasts” hub featuring breakout creators, best new podcasts, top video podcasts and standout episodes.
For creators, Spotify is launching its annual 2024 Wrapped for Creators microsite, letting audio and video creators see data stories about their growth from the past year, their top episodes, fan engagement trends and more. Creators can access their unique microsite through their Spotify for Creators account.
“More than half a billion people have listened to a podcast on Spotify since we entered the space in 2019 and we can officially say: 2024 was another great year for podcasts,” said Jordan Newman, Spotify’s head of content partnerships.
Spotify has found that video podcasts have higher engagement than audio-only shows — and the company is launching a new incentive for creators to share their podcasts in video format. Starting in January 2025, the Spotify Partner Program (in addition to paying a share of ad revenue) will pay video-podcast creators based on the amount of time Premium users watch their shows. For Premium subscribers in select markets including the U.S., video podcasts will be available without dynamic ad interruption. “We feel like this gives creators a great revenue stream they haven’t had,” Newman said. “And it’s a fantastic user experience for Premium subscribers.”
