John Mayer takes 'indefinite break from live performing' thanks to throat woes
Last year, John Mayer had to disappear for a while to get treated for throat problems. (Sound familiar?)
As of a few weeks ago, everything was looking up for Mayer — he had just dropped his new single “Shadow Days,” announced the release date of his new album Born and Raised, and set up a brand new tour for himself.
Unfortunately, all of that will have to go on the back burner for now. In an announcement made on his official website, Mayer disclosed that the problems with his vocal cords are forcing him to cancel all of his upcoming plans. Born and Raised will still be released on May 22, but otherwise that’s the last we’ll be hearing from Mayer for the foreseeable future.
Mayer explained the details of his injury on his site.
“I want to explain this a bit more in depth than I have in the past, because I know there’s some confusion as to what this condition is,” he wrote. “A granuloma forms and continues to snowball because it’s in a spot where the vocal cords hit together and there’s no way to really give it a chance to heal without a good stretch of time and some pretty intensive treatment. In short, it’s one giant pain in the ass.”
Mayer also noted that he isn’t entirely sure what the next stage of his treatment will be, but it will involve another surgery and a lengthy period of silence to allow for proper healing. “The only thing that stops me from devolving into a puddle of tears is knowing that it’s a long life, and the greatest gift in the world is being able to create music no matter what the circumstances,” he wrote. “So these are the new circumstances, and I’ll find a way to make it mean something.”
It’s not all bad news, either, as Mayer admitted that he is going to use his down time to begin writing an entirely new album that will hopefully represent his comeback, whenever that may be.
