John Oliver: Internet Dangerous For Women
The Internet, which was supposed to change our lives in a good way, also has become a dangerous place for “any woman who makes the mistake of having a thought in her mind and then vocalizing it online,” John Oliver said last night in a nearly 16-minute segment on Last Week Tonight. Just 23 states in this country have enacted measures making revenge porn illegal; in the other 27 it is not; he did not mention what is the legal status of revenge porn in Washington D.C. In states where it’s not illegal, victims have had to go after revenge-porn perpetrators, for instance, with charges of stalking or harassment – which may require victims to send nude photos of themselves to authorities in order to trademark those pics to get them off the web.
Even if you can get police to investigate, some officers do not understand the Internet and “that’s a problem, because the police cannot investigate the crime if they genuinely don’t understand the medium in which it happened,” Oliver said. “If someone tried to drown you, you don’t want the police saying ‘Oh I get the murder attempt but what’s this water thing you keep bringing up? Is it like air, but a bit more chokey, is that what it is?’”
Some websites, including Reddit and Google, have banned revenge porn, while others have not, noted Oliver who, tellingly, felt compelled to justify the lengthy segment. To those viewers who think it’s maybe much ado about nothing, he said, “congratulations on your white penis — because if you have one of those, you probably have a very different experience of the Internet.”
