John Oliver 'nearly burst into tears' while voting for the first time as a U.S. citizen

On Monday's The Late Show With Stephen Colbert guest John Oliver shared the story about voting in his very first U.S. presidential election. Oliver became a U.S. citizen in December, so this was the first time he was eligible to vote.

While he was a little disappointed that there was no massive lever involved in the actual voting process, the overall experience was very emotional for him.

“Scanning [the ballot] into the machine and the machine saying your vote has been counted, I nearly burst into tears,” said Oliver. “That is the truth. My eyes got misty and I thought, ‘I don't know if I can cry in the voting station?’”

Oliver has long been a vocal critic of the Trump administration. He often spends a significant amount of time during his Emmy-winning show, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver, examining the president's policies.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. on CBS.
