John Wick Spinoff Announced Starring Donnie Yen

The next John Wick film won’t star Keanu Reeves. Instead, it’s Donnie Yen who’s headlining.

He’s reprising his role as Caine, the blind assassin introduced in the most recent series entry, John Wick: Chapter 4. Caine fights with - you guessed it - a cane, and uses sound and smell to track his enemies. The disability doesn’t slow him down. At one point he holds his own against Reeves’ Wick in a furiously frenetic fight.

According to a report by Deadline, the film is set to shoot in Hong Kong next year. “While the logline is being kept under wraps,” writes the outlet, “the new film will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.”

John Wick 4 had a way more depressing ending originally, but it's good to see Yen's character stayed alive.

The John Wick universe is expanding. First we had 2023 miniseries The Continental: From the World of John Wick, then Lionsgate announced a spinoff called Ballerina starring Ana de Armas. She plays an assassin trained in the traditions of the Ruska Roma. That’s been delayed a year, however, from June 7, 2024 to June 6, 2025.

“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an indelible mark and had fans asking for more,” says Adam Fogelson, chair, Lionsgate Motion Picture Group. “The John Wick universe that Chad, Basil, Erica, and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey.”

“Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role,” says Yen.
