Johnny Goodman, Former BAFTA Chairman & ‘Saint’ Associate Producer, Dead At 87

British television producer Johnny Goodman, who was behind such ITC Entertainment shows as The Saint, The Persuaders! and The Baron, died on Friday, January 30. His death was reported by James Bond and Saint thesp Roger Moore on Twitter (below). He was 87.

Goodman left school at 14 to pursue work in the film industry. He cut his teeth in the mail room of London’s Lime Grove Studios and in the office of The Avengers producer Albert Fennell. During the 1950s he held a number of assistant director spots on such films as Two Grooms For A Bride, Cross-Up and No Smoking. In 1962, Goodman joined ITC’s The Saint as a production supervisor, a job which launched him into a career behind a string of notable British spy TV series during the 1960s. Goodman formed his own production company with Moore and producer Robert S. Baker. Together they created The Persuaders!, which also starred Tony Curtis. But unlike The Saint, which was a hit both in the U.K. and the United States, The Persuaders! didn’t take off in the latter. From 1987-1989, Goodman served as the Chairman of BAFTA.
