Jonathan Scott and Zooey Deschanel's Wedding Will Have One Element His First Wife 'Forbade'
The 'Property Brothers' host and the 'New Girl' alum got engaged in Scotland in August after four years of dating
Jonathan Scott has some very specific plans for his wedding to Zooey Deschanel.
During an interview on the You Made It Weird With Pete Holmes podcast, the Property Brothers star, 45, opened up about how he and his New Girl alum fiancé, 43, respect each other's wants and needs — and that includes their wishes for their future nuptials.
The HGTV host shares that at his first wedding — to Kelsey Ully, a Las Vegas-based airline-crew scheduler, with whom he tied the knot in 2007 and split from two years later — she refused to include bagpipes in the big day.
“It should have been a red flag for me, but I'm Scottish. I'm proud of my Scottish heritage,” Scott explains. “We had this beautiful outdoor wedding… our friends let us use their place on a lake. It was gorgeous. But she forbade me from having bagpipes play at any point during the wedding.”
“I get that it's too loud in a church or something, but we were out on the lake,” he adds.
With Deschanel, his instrument of choice is a non-issue.
“Zooey and I have talked about the stuff that we want to do,” says Scott. “She knows the things that are important to me, the things that have hurt me. I've had other relationships where the person ended up doing the same thing that hurt me in a previous relationship. They knew that that was what happened in a previous life, and they still did it.”
“That's what I think is so incredible — when you find somebody who knows your sensitivities, who knows what has hurt you,” he adds. “And they vow to never do that.”
Deschanel appreciated his bagpipe-filled proposal in August.
“I proposed at Edinburgh Castle, I had a pipe band setup… we cleared the castle. We were the only people there,” Scott reminisces. Zooey's two kids helped him pop the question, holding up a banner than said "Zooey, will you marry me?"

Aside from the planned musical moment, the couple haven't shared many details of their big day yet.
“We've just been basking in engaged bliss and haven't really figured out anything," Deschanel told PEOPLE in an October cover story, adding “We do love to throw a party.”
