Josh Brolin apologizes for breaking social distancing rules to visit dad James, stepmom Barbra Streisand
Josh Brolin has apologized for violating California's stay at home order amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Deadpool star faced backlash after he shared a photo of his family visiting father James Brolin and stepmom, Barbra Streisand.
In the since-deleted picture, Josh, his wife Kathryn and their 1-year-old daughter, Westlyn, were hanging poolside in Malibu with James and the legendary singer. Although everyone was wearing masks and were standing a few feet apart, people called out Josh for breaking social distancing guidelines. The actor issued a mea culpa on Instagram and said he was "humbled by the response."
"This is actually a serious video," Josh began.
"My father lives next door to us and we had a plan to go see them and not be near them and that plan was broken and that’s our responsibility. We were going to pick something up and show [Westlyn] the pool because we don’t have a pool and yeah, I think it was irresponsible," he explained.
"You know, it’s hard to be honest sometimes. It’s hard to be honest and say, ‘Maybe I screwed up’ and I knew that that was in the air," the Avengers: Endgame actor continued. "Not because of the responses, but the responses brought me back to my own truth and it’s humbling as hell, man, because I know there’s some people out there that — no masks, no gloves, no interest in it."
"I know for me that's not the case, and we've been very responsible and I apologize," he added. "I do feel responsible to my fellow man, period. So, my apologies. And I don't — I’m not an advocate of doing anything outside of taking care of each other and making sure that we get through this even if we go overboard. Even if we go overboard and are too protective, at least we’re doing it for a reason because we'll look back on this as being a very short time for a very long-term solution."
The comments on Josh's video were overwhelmingly supportive.
"It wasn’t. You’re fine. Don’t let groupthink shame you. You were wearing masks for Gods sake," one person wrote.
"Takes a man good to the core to admit when he is wrong," someone else added. "Personally I think going next door knowing the context now is not as dangerous as made out, but still should be considered."
"Don’t drag yourself brother," one commenter added. "It was a moment. A lapse in judgement and you accounted for it. You took responsibility for it. You can only go forward and y’all know what to do: stay in."
Streisand appeared to appreciate the gesture. She shared an Instagram photo of Kathryn holding up a sign during the visit.
