Joss Stone Reveals Her New Single 'Loving You' Was Inspired by a Sweet Moment with Her Husband (Exclusive)

The Grammy-winning singer opens up about her life on — and off — the stage with her family

Joss Stone is ready to spark a fire with her new single “Loving You."

Stone — who's kicking off the U.S. leg of her Ellipses Tour — tells PEOPLE exclusively the inspiration behind the song came from a meaningful moment with her husband, Cody DaLuz, while they were still dating.

“I wrote this song before we had children. I was like, 'Stay up, stay up with me, babe,'” recalls Stone, 37. “I was always trying to think of ways to get him to stay awake and he'd be like, 'OK,' [and] he'd just fall asleep. So that's sort of what the lyrics are all about. It's like, oh my gosh, I fell in love with this guy. How do I get him to stay?”

Though she's been touring, Stone says she's been able to spend time with her family on the road — and enjoy newlywed life following a surprise wedding last year.

Stone says her daughter Violet Melissa, 3?, is one of her biggest fans. But while the star, who's also mom to son Shackleton 'Shack' Stoker, 21 months, loves seeing Violet in her big sound-muffling headphones at her shows, Stone underscores that she wants her kids to live a "normal" life.

“To be growing up watching Mommy [perform and have] thousands of people sing along with you and scream your name and be so excited, it's really exciting. It's a great thing," says Stone. "However, I do not want my children to think that that means you are valid. So it's very important that’s a sometimes thing. It's not an all-the-time thing.”

On 20 Years of Soul: Live in Concert, Stone is looking back on her entire career.

“I got so many messages saying live album, we need a live album,” Stone says about the upcoming release. “I avoided for a very long time because I just didn't think I was good enough to do a live album. But then I realized when I'm in the studio, I sing it live anyway. I just need to embrace what they're asking for."

Putting together the album was an emotional time for Stone, who says she was brought to tears while she was folding clothes and thinking about how much effort she had put into it, from working with the band to walking down memory lane.

"This is my life in an album, and it sounds really good. And I just felt very proud. And there are moments where I'm not perfect, but that's OK," she says.

Up next Stone, who gives back through her Joss Stone Foundation, says she's looking forward to showcasing some disco at her U.S. tour dates in honor of her kids.

"I've never done disco before, but my daughter just loves disco music," she says. "She really loves to dance, and now my son really loves to dance. So I've got two little dancing toddlers on my hands here."
