'I would just f***ing love that': Donald Glover, 'Solo' cast makes case for Chewbacca movie
Warning: Minor Solo spoilers below.
The proliferation of Star Wars spinoffs, from 2016’s Rogue One to the new release Solo: A Star Wars Story to the announced trilogy Jon Favreau will bring to TV to the in-the-works Boba Fett outing, opens up all kinds of new possibilities.
Given the love that Donald Glover is generating for his take on a suave young Lando Calrissian (not to mention his general pop-culture takeover with Atlanta and “This Is America”), Han Solo’s frenemy originated by Billy Dee Williams seems like he could be next in line for his own standalone entry.
But don’t forget about Han’s true right-hand man, er, Wookiee. “That would be so good,” Glover said of a potential Chewbacca standalone movie at Solo‘s Los Angeles press event (watch above), where he and co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge (who performs the motion-capture droid character L3-37) joked about a Minions-esque, all-subtitled adventure. “I would just f***ing love that.”
Glover and Waller-Bridge aren’t alone. Their co-stars Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton, and Joonas Suotamo (who plays Chewbacca), as well as Solo director Ron Howard, all endorsed the idea of a solo Chewie adventure
While Solo offers a glimpse into Chewbacca’s origin story — or at least the origin of how he first met Han (Alden Ehrenreich), there’s so much more about the towering, roaring, shaggy-haired fan favorite to be explored. He is a whopping 190 years old, after all, when Solo takes place (and wow he looks great for 190).
We could see, for instance, if he ever found love. An especially buzzed-about moment from the film’s trailer featured Chewy gently knocking heads with another Wookiee, which had many fans geeked about a possible romance in store. If you’ve seen Solo, you know that relationship never materializes. (Chewy did have a wife and li’l furball in the Star Wars Holiday Special (1978), but as Howard assured us, that much-maligned TV entry is not considered canon.)
They have to do something with all that sex appeal. “He is hot, though,” Waller-Bridge opined. “He’s insanely hot.”
