Justin Bieber admits he had doubts about committing to now-wife Hailey Baldwin
Justin Bieber admits he wasn’t sure he could “be faithful” to now-wife Hailey Baldwin.
The pair, who had a history, became became engaged rather quickly in July 2018 — just four months after he broke things off for the last time with Selena Gomez. On Tuesday’s Ellen DeGeneres Show, the pop star admit he had one hesitation about popping the question to the model. It wasn’t his age (just 23) or lingering feelings for Gomez (he didn’t admit to those). His worry was whether or not he could stay faithful to Baldwin and fully commit to her for the rest of his life.
"I was extremely nervous," Bieber, now 25, said of the proposal. "In the past, we talked about me asking the question and I felt like she would say yes, so I wasn't really nervous about the saying yes.”
He continued, “But I think I was more nervous about: Am I going to make this commitment? Am I able to make this commitment as a man and be able to honor what I say? Because that's a serious commitment when you say you're going to love someone for better, for worse and be faithful. That's huge. Am I able to do that? So I think that is really what I was battling with."
Ultimately Bieber — who bonded with Baldwin over their shared faith after first being introduced in 2009 —decided yes. They became engaged in July and tied the knot at a NYC court house in September of that year. Last year, they had a big wedding for family and friends after postponing the celebration several times as he dealt with emotional issues and drug troubles.
"I finally was like, 'You know what, I'm going to make the decision and follow through with it,” he said. “Be a husband. This is what I've always wanted. I'm going to just choose this woman and just do it."
Bieber said he’s “glad it worked out because she is an amazing, amazing, amazing person. She really is. She's super precious. I enjoy spending my life with her."
And, yes, his new track “Yummy” really is about “my sex life,” he told an inquiring DeGeneres.
Bieber and Baldwin were together and enjoying some full-on PDA at the premiere of his YouTube Originals docu-series, Seasons, in which she is featured.
Bieber’s mother, Pattie Mallette, was also there for the big night with Bieber’s grandparents.
In Seasons, Baldwin shared her side of committing to Bieber. The pair had been friends, dated, split because he wouldn’t commit, then got back together and swiftly were engaged.
“It’s just such a big life decision that it was just, it was so much emotion all at one time,” she said.
Surprisingly, Baldwin’s parents — Stephen, brother of Alec, and Kennya — were OK with it.
“I remember calling my parents when we decided to get married and I said, ‘This is the time I need you to stop me from doing something crazy if you think this is a bad idea.’” Hailey recalled. “‘Cause in my heart I knew that it’s what I wanted to do but I was like, just tell me right now if you think, well, whoa, just relax and take a breath and think about this and see how you feel in like 24 hours or a week or something. And they were like, ‘Honestly, we think that this is meant to be for you and we know that this is what you want, so we trust you.’ And I was like, alright.”
Bieber added, “Since I was young, I always wanted to be married. I always wanted a family. That was always high on my list. But I didn’t know it would happen, so I’m really pumped about it. I’m really happy about it. And I have the sickest chick in the game. She’s so awesome.”
Bieber also announced that the release date for his fifth studio album, Changes, will be Valentine's Day. And his Changes tour will kick off in North America on May 14 — which hopefully will turn out better than his 2017 Purpose tour.
