Kamala Harris Means Business in Bespoke Chloé Tan Suit, Spotlights ‘Optimism, Hope and Faith’ in Opening Remarks at Democratic National Convention 2024

Kamala Harris made an appearance on night one of the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago on Monday. The Vice President of the United States shared her enthusiasm for the week ahead, as delegates from across the U.S. and its territories gather for the 2024 convention ahead of the November presidential election.

For the first night of the Democratic National Convention, Harris wore a bespoke suit courtesy of French luxury fashion house Chloé. The tan power suit featured brown grain de poudre wool with a double breasted blazer and wide leg trousers. The custom look also came with a white crepe de chine lavaliere blouse. Search interest for Harris’ outfit went viral, becoming a breakout Google search overnight, according to Google Trends.

Harris’ suit was designed by Chloé’s creative director Chemena Kamali, who joined the fashion house last year in October. “My heart has always been Chloé’s. It has been since I stepped through its doors more than 20 years ago,” Kamali said at the time in a statement to WWD.

The suit also received comparisons to former President Barack Obama’s tan suit, which he wore during his second term — most notably during a 2014 press conference on Middle Eastern affairs and ISIS. Other presidents who have worn variations on the tan suit include President Reagan and current President Joe Biden.

During the evening’s proceedings of the DNC, Harris took the stage with Beyoncé’s song “Freedom” playing over the speakers in Chicago’s United Center. “Looking out at everyone tonight, I see the beauty of our great nation — people from every corner of our country and every walk of life are here united by our shared vision for the future of our country,” Harris said.

“And this November, we will come together and declare with one voice, as one people we are moving forward. With optimism, hope and faith, guided by our love of country knowing we all have so much more in common than what separates us.”

The 2024 Democratic National Convention takes place in Chicago beginning Monday and concludes on Thursday. Delegates from all 50 states and U.S. territories will gather to formally nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for president and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as the candidate for the office of vice president.
