Karla Sofía Gascón responds to Conan O’Brien’s Oscar joke by saying Jimmy Kimmel is a ‘fabulous host’
At the start of Sunday's Oscars, host Conan O'Brien poked fun at Karla Sofía Gascón's highly publicized social media scandal by declaring, "Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel." Well, the Best Actress nominee for Emilia Pérez has now responded to O'Brien's Oscar joke.
"Thanks to the members of the Academy for the nomination for best leading actress, for the invitation to the gala," Gascón posted on Instagram. "I enjoyed it very much, very enjoyable and fun, especially its fabulous host Jimmy Kimmel, he is fantastic, every day he looks more like the great Conan O'Brien." She ended that sentence with a kiss emoji, suggesting there were no hard feelings.

This was O'Brien's first time hosting the Academy Awards, while Kimmel was the emcee on four different occasions (2017, 2018, 2020, and 2024).
"I loved hugging so many friends and colleagues at this homecoming," Gascón continued. "Congratulations to all the winners, especially to Zoe Salda?a, Camille, Clément Ducol," she said about her costar and the songwriters. "Thank you Netflix, Why Not Productions, [and filmmaker] Jacques Audiard. Thank you Emilia Pérez for teaching me so many things.”

Gascón was just one of the 13 historic nominations for Emilia Pérez, the most ever for a non-English-language film. The Netflix dramedy musical ended up walking away with two trophies: Best Supporting Actress for Salda?a and Best Song for "El Mal."
The awards campaign for Emilia Pérez was derailed shortly after the Oscar nominations were announced when Gascón's former offensive social media posts were unearthed, including statements about George Floyd, Muslims, and diversity at the Oscars. O'Brien joked on the Academy Awards stage that the only person who said the F-word more than the characters in Anora was "Karla Sofía Gascón's publicist." He then envisioned the so-called publicist shouting, "You tweeted what?!"
Up until recently, it was up in the air whether Gascón would attend the Oscars, since she skipped all of the other awards shows following the controversy. But she showed up at Friday's César Awards, and it was reported that Netflix paid for her travel plans to come to Hollywood for the big show. Gascón made history at the Academy Awards by becoming the first openly transgender woman nominated for Best Actress.
During a commercial break, Gascón was spotted exchanging pleasantries with Selena Gomez, her Emilia Pérez costar, in the audience of the Dolby Theater (see below). Conversely, Gascón and Salda?a have not been seen together in public since the Golden Globes on Jan. 5, though Salda?a did address Gascón's offensive tweets when she stated, "It makes me sad," and, "I don't have tolerance for negative rhetoric."
