Kate Hudson says stories about her raising her daughter 'genderless' are 'clickbait'

Kate Hudson is clarifying her comments about raising her newborn daughter, Rani, “genderless.”

She used the term in an interview earlier this month with AOL (which, like Yahoo, is a Verizon Media group brand), but her quote soon took on a life of its own, making headlines around the web. That led Hudson to speak out about what she calls “clickbait” headlines.

In a post on Instagram Monday, Hudson wrote, “Recently someone asked me something along the lines of, if having and raising a girl is different from boys. My response was simple. Not really. This whole clickbait tactic of saying I’m raising my daughter to be ‘genderless’ is silly and frankly doesn’t even make sense.”

The mom of three continued, “I raise and will continue to raise my children, both my boys and my girl to feel free to be exactly who they want to be. To feel confident in their life choices and feel loved and supported no matter what. Me saying a ‘genderless approach’ was a way of refocusing the conversation in a direction that could exist outside of the female stereotype. It just felt a little antiquated to me. Not all girls want to be a princess, some want to be a king. And that’s fine with me.”

Prior to Hudson’s clarification, she was praised by Jazz Jennings, who is one of the youngest publicly documented people to identify as transgender — at age 5. The I Am Jazz star told Access Hollywood, “I love that. I think that’s how all parents should raise their kids. It shouldn’t be about gender. Just allow the kid to identify with what they identify with and allow them to be happy.a

During Hudson’s interview with AOL, she was asked, “Does having a baby girl make you do anything differently or change your approach at all?” She replied, “It doesn’t really change my approach, but there’s definitely a difference. I think you just raise your kids individually regardless — like a genderless [approach]. We still don’t know what she’s going to identify as. I will say that, right now, she is incredibly feminine in her energy, her sounds and her way.” She went on to talk about how much she enjoys shopping for her daughter.

She also spoke about her own childhood and how mom Goldie Hawn and pa Kurt Russell made her feel “emotionally safe” and gave a “really solid upbringing of love and security.”

Hudson welcomed her baby in October. It’s her first with boyfriend Danny Fujikawa — and the actress said they’re already talking more kids. She also has two older sons from previous relationships with rock stars Matthew Bellamy and Chris Robinson.
