Kate Middleton surprises Eurovision fans with instrumental piano performance
Kate Middleton made a surprise appearance at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, flaunting her musical skills in a pre-recorded instrumental piano performance.
The Princess of Wales, 41, teamed up with last year’s Eurovision champions from Ukraine, the Kalush Orchestra, in her appearance on one of the world’s most widely-watched non-sporting TV events.
Kalush Orchestra recorded a section of their winning song “Stefania,” at the Maidan Nezalezhnosti metro station in Kyiv, Ukraine, reports People Magazine.
Middleton recorded her segment earlier this month in the Crimson Drawing Room of Windsor Castle, with help from composers, arrangers and musical directors Joe Price and Kojo Samuel.
Kensington Palace shared photos from the princess’ recording session, where she can be seen wearing a blue silk dress and sitting at a black grand piano in the drawing room.
Middleton was joined in her performance by other notable British musicians, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sam Ryder, Ms. Banks, Ballet Black, Bolt Strings, and Joss Stone.
It wasn’t the first time the Princess of Wales has performed publicly. In 2021, she made her musical debut accompanying singer Tom Walker on the keys during a Christmas carol concert at Westminster Abbey.
Middleton, who learned piano as a child, said she took “great comfort” in playing music throughout the pandemic.
“Music was very important to [her] during the lockdowns,” said a source close to the royals.
“She also recognizes the powerful way in which music brings people together — especially during difficult times. For these reasons, she was keen to be part of Tom’s performance in this way,” they said at the time.
This year’s Eurovision competition was won by Swedish singer Loreen, for her ballad “Tattoo.” The 39-year-old had previously won the contest in 2012 and becomes only the second performer to win twice.
