Kathie Lee Gifford Suffers Serious Injury While Recovering From Hip Replacement Surgery
On the heels of a hip replacement surgery, Kathie Lee Gifford suffered a serious injury that landed her in the hospital for more than a week.
The former Today host, 70, revealed that she recently fractured her pelvis during an interview with People published on Tuesday, July 30.
As Gifford told the publication, she "moved 300 books by myself" during signings for her new book in Nashville. "I weakened my body. It's my own fault," she said.
The following day, when a friend arrived to pick her up at her house, Gifford said she rushed to the door and tripped—fracturing her pelvis in two places. She was hospitalized for more than a week for physical therapy.
"It didn't take much, because I was weak in that spot," she told People. "And the next thing you know, I am back in the hospital with a fractured pelvis: the front and the back. That's more painful than anything I went through with the hip. The pelvis is unbelievably painful. but anyway, here I am."
Gifford has had a rough summer, health-wise. On July 17, she appeared on Today to promote her new book, Herod and Mary, and discussed her hip replacement surgery a month prior.
After seeking medical help for "agonizing pain," doctors ruled out a problem in Gifford's spine and then determined she needed a total hip replacement.
"My doctor finished the surgery, came in to tell me it went beautifully, and then he said, 'Kathie, how have you been existing all this time?'" she told Hoda Kotb. "He said, 'It's one of the worst hips I've ever seen.'"
Hopefully, Gifford's recovery goes as smoothly!
