Kathryn Bigelow to Direct White House Thriller Movie for Netflix
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow has officially set her feature directorial comeback with Netflix, following the cancellation of Aurora.
The Hurt Locker filmmaker will be directing a suspense-filled thriller set in The White House. The outlet notes that the untitled project will have the same tone as 2012’s Zero Dark Thirty. According to its brief synopsis, the fill will revolve around “a group of White House officials scrambling to deal with an incoming missile attack on the U.S.”
Further details about the film’s cast and potential release date remained under wraps.
Kathryn Bigelow’s Canceled Netflix Movie
Before signing on for the untitled White House thriller, Bigelow was originally attached to helm the film adaptation of Aurora, based on blockbuster scribe David Keopp’s survival thriller novel, which was first announced back in 2022.
The movie would have centered around characters who are coping with the collapse of the social order, set against a catastrophic worldwide power crisis. The apocalyptic thriller was ultimately scrapped after it was revealed that Netflix had already left the project earlier this year. Despite this, Bigelow and Netflix remained committed to working with each other, with former Netflix Films boss Scott Stuber previously confirming that they are currently collaborating on “couple of things.”
“I think what’s exciting is we have a ton of great filmmakers. We’re really pushing to get Kathryn Bigelow’s next movie and working with her on a couple of things,” Stuber said. “She’s one of the greats, and we all need another Kathryn Bigelow movie. We need it so badly. So we’re trying. We’ve got multiple pots on the stove for her because she’s one of my…I idolize her, and she’s one of the coolest, greatest artists there is, so it would be a dream come true to be able to make a movie with her.”
