Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder Reveal Why They Might Be ‘Married’ — Plus Their Sweetest Friendship Moments

If you were around in the '90s, chances are good you had a crush on Keanu Reeves or Winona Ryder (or maybe even both of them!). The two stars, who both acted in generation-defining films and possessed distinctly youthful, edgy charisma, have also shared the screen several times. 

In 1992, the two young actors made their first and most famous appearance together, starring as young lovers in the gothic horror film Bram Stoker’s Dracula. They then went on costar in the experimental animated film A Scanner Darkly (2006), the indie ensemble drama The Private Lives of Pippa Lee (2009), and, most recently, the rom-com Destination Wedding (2018).

Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder might technically be married

In an Entertainment Weekly interview for Destination Wedding, Ryder playfully claimed that she and Reeves were technically married during the filming of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. As she recalled, “We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god, I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis Ford Coppola used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.” The actress even pointed out that the filming of their wedding took place on Valentine’s Day, and Reeves responded, “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”

In a video interview with Esquire, Reeves, in his inimitably chill fashion, said, “Winona says we are. Coppola says we are. So I guess we’re married . . . under the eyes of God.”

Reeves and Ryder have been friends since they were rising stars in the late '80s, and in a recent interview promoting Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ryder said, “I would literally do anything with him. He’s so special.” 

In the same interview, Ryder also revealed that more than 30 years after Dracula, she and Reeves still call each other husband and wife, and shared some cute details of their text message exchanges. As she described it, “We always say who it is even though it says it on the text. So . . . on his birthday, I'll write 'Happy birthday, my husband,' and I put 'Noni,' and he's like, 'Hey, wife, love you! KR57,' like on each birthday, he's like 'KR57,' or whatever his age is, and he's always done that. He's the best.”

Reeves and Ryder may call each other husband and wife and say they’re technically married, but neither of them are actually married in real life. Both of the stars are in long-term relationships. Ryder has been dating sustainable fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011, while Reeves has been with artist Alexandra Grant since 2019 — and we can’t help but wonder if the hip couples ever go on double dates!
