Kenny G says he's making music with Kanye West: 'I can't really say much'
Get ready for Kanye West’s music to get a shot of Kenny G.
The saxophonist and the rapper are collaborating on new music, the adult contemporary favorite told the Dallas Observer in a new interview. Their project came out of their meeting earlier this year, when West recruited him to play music for his wife, Kim Kardashian, at their home on Valentine’s Day.
“[West] reached out to me and wanted me to come and do that,” the “Forever in Love” artist said. “I didn’t know him real well, but I was obviously flattered. He could not have been more welcoming. Since then we’ve actually been in the studio working on some music together. I can’t really say much else because he doesn’t really want anyone to talk about music before he releases it. Just suffice to say that we’re collaborating on some things, and nobody knows what’s going to happen.”
Yahoo Entertainment has reached out to West for comment.
Both stars have worked with numerous artists from different genres, so their teaming up shouldn’t be too surprising. Kenny G’s past musical partners include Smokey Robinson, Robin Thicke and Stevie Nicks, while West has collaborated with the likes of John Mayer, John Legend and Paul McCartney.
Just after the love day appearance, Kenny G told Rolling Stone that he and West might eventually work together. He described what happened after West walked into his home hearing his sax.
“I started playing some really sweet blues riffs and soulful riffs and a couple of jazz riffs, and I could see he thought it was really good,” he said. “I said something like, ‘This kind of sound would be really great with some of your music.’ And [Kanye] said, ‘Yeah, maybe we can go to the studio and check it out.’ So I thought that was cool.”
Kenny G, whose real name is Kenneth Gorelick, stressed that his music is much more than the love songs audiences know from the radio.
“If you haven’t seen us play before, a person could get the idea that you’re going to hear me play instrumental ballads and it’s going to be romantic and it’s going to be real soft, but it’s not anything like that,” he said. “I think you’ll really be wowed, and it won’t be boring.”
Someone else who’s never boring: West, whose album Jesus Is King, an adaptation of his star-studded Sunday Services, is expected later this month.
