Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars collab ‘Die with a Smile’: Late-breaking Grammy contender for Record, Song of the Year

A collaboration between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars had been rumored in recent weeks. Then on August 16 those rumors were definitively confirmed with the sudden release of their duet single “Die with a Smile” (watch the video above). Written by Gaga and Mars with all-star hit-makers Dernst Emile II (Oscar winner and two-time Grammy winner for Song of the Year), Andrew Watt (Grammy winner for Producer of the Year) and James Fauntleroy (Grammy winner for Song of the Year), it comes just in time for Grammy consideration; the eligibility period ends August 30. The joining of these two awards juggernauts on a sentimental love ballad could be irresistible to voters.

Lady Gaga has won 13 Grammys out of 36 nominations including Record of the Year noms for “Poker Face,” “Shallow” with Bradley Cooper and “I Get a Kick Out of You” with Tony Bennett, though she hasn’t yet won the category. As you can see, collabs have done especially well for the iconoclastic singer-songwriter; she also won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Rain on Me” with Ariana Grande and earned a nom for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for “Telephone” with Beyonce. But in Mars she may have found her most potent Grammy partner yet.

More from GoldDerby

Mars has won 15 Grammys out of 31 nominations. He hasn’t lost a single nomination since 2014, winning every single one of his last 13 bids, including three Record of the Year victories for “Uptown Funk” with Mark Ronson, “24K Magic” and “Leave the Door Open” with Anderson Paak as the supergroup Silk Sonic. That ties him with Paul Simon as the most awarded artist in the history of the category. Perhaps surprisingly, he and Paak didn’t submit their album “An Evening with Silk Sonic” for Grammy consideration at all, choosing to “sexually” rest on their laurels. Other Record of the Year and Song of the Year Grammy contenders may hope he opts out of this race too.
