Launching the 'Sausage Party' Oscar Campaign With Seth Rogen and Michael Cera

In February, up to five films from 2016 will be nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. Is there any chance that the R-rated raunchfest Sausage Party could be one of them?

It’s a question worth asking after the comedy opened to higher-than-expected box office with $33 million, not to mention big love from critics with an 83 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

And it’s a question we put to stars Seth Rogen (who also co-wrote and produced) and Michael Cera when they stopped by Yahoo’s studios (watch above). “I know we won’t get nominated for an Oscar, but if we ever had a shot, this movie would be it,” Rogen said.

Sausage Party does face some stiff competition. It’s been a stellar year for animation so far, with three mega-hits already in the running: Zootopia, Finding Dory, and The Secret Life of Pets. And there’s still contenders like Laika’s Kubo and the Two Strings and Disney’s Moana to come.

“You get five nominees,” said Rogen, who passed up on his chance to disparage Zootopia and Dory but said his film might be better than Secret Life of Pets. “So we don’t have to say we’re the best animated film. We just have to say we’re the fifth best animated film.”

As Cera added, “That’s good enough.”
