Laverne Cox’s Intense New Netflix Movie Hits #1 Just Days After She Wows in Show-Stopping Emmys Look
What if I told you that in order to thrive in society, you had to be pretty? And in order to be pretty, you needed to partake in a mandatory operation that absolves you of all of your flaws? That is the basic premise of Laverne Cox's new Netflix movie, Uglies, based the Scott Westerfeld book series of the same name.
Just days after Cox debuted her show-stopping Emmys look, Uglies hit number one on Netflix. According to the streaming platform, the film chronicles a "futuristic dystopia with enforced beauty standards, [as] a teen awaiting mandatory cosmetic surgery embarks on a journey to find her missing friend."
In the trailer, we see actress Joey King as sixteen-year-old Tally who is denied her "Pretty" operation until she can reveal to Dr. Cable-—played by Cox-—where her missing friend Shay is. She is tasked with a near impossible journey to spy on the outcasts of society, where Shay has found solace, in order to return her to the land of the Uglies. Dr. Cable is the leader and brains behind the Pretty procedures and Cox's cool and calm depiction of the chilling antagonist in the trailer gives viewers a chance to see her in a darker, more villainous role.

When Cox graced the red carpet at the 76th annual Emmys this past Sunday, she stunned in a vintage black and gold Alexander McQueen dress. The fitted black sleeveless V-neck gown was adorned with intricate gold floral embroidery and featured a fierce and regal tiger at the base of the dress. The Orange Is the New Black actress dressed up the already elegant ensemble with a large velvet sash and a long gold chainmail-esque choker that draped down over the front of the V-neck. She completed the look with a terracotta-colored smokey eye and a bold warm chocolate lip.
At the Emmys, in addition to her immaculate outfit, Cox also shared a very special moment with fellow transgender actress Nava Mau on Mau's historic nomination for her role in the dark drama Baby Reindeer. According to HuffPost, Cox, who served as a red carpet E! News host, fought back tears as she greeted Mau on the red carpet saying, “I’m supposed to keep it together. I’m the host. I’m so proud of you. I’m so proud of you," in response to Mau's groundbreaking nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. “Ten years later, I’m not the last,” Cox continued. The OITNB actress was the first openly transgender person to be nominated for an acting Emmy ten years ago for her work on the acclaimed prison drama.
