Lea Thompson Shares Blunt Feelings After Ex-Fiancé Dennis Quaid’s Bold Political Statement
Lea Thompson—who you might know from the Back to the Future trilogy, Some Kind of Wonderful, and more recently, Switched at Birth—took to social media to share her honest thoughts after her ex-fiancé Dennis Quaid spoke out in support of presidential candidate Donald Trump.
Quaid appeared at a Trump rally in California near Coachella on Saturday, Oct. 12, to voice support for the former president, telling the crowd, "Are we going to be a nation of law and order or wide open borders? Which is it? Because it's time to pick a side."

Thompson took to X to share her thoughts on Quaid's statement, referencing the two's former engagement between 1984 to 1987 as she said, "I was engaged to him.??#VoteBlueToStopTheStupid #crimeisactuallydown."
The actress' comment about crime is possibly in reference to data from the FBI released earlier this year that reported that violent crime fell by over 15 percent in the U.S. at the start of 2024. Comparing 2024 crime to the same period in 2023, the data also explored the rates of specific types of crimes, with murder falling 26.4 percent during that time.
Many fans shared support for Thompson's statement, with replies on X like, "You made the right choice!!!!!" and "Okay, this is an epic tweet. ??," while some shared similar comments in support of Quaid.
The former couple started dating in 1982 after meeting on the set of Jaws 3-D. Thompson and Quaid were going strong for years until their split, with Thompson meeting her now-husband, director Howard Deutch, on the set of Some Kind of Wonderful in 1986. The couple tied the knot in 1989 and are still together. Quaid got married to his current wife, Laura Savoie, in 2020.
