Leslie Jones Speaks Up for More Diversity in Fashion
Just when it seemed like the all-female remake of “Ghostbusters” had reached peak controversy, Leslie Jones successfully riled up the fashion industry and social-justice warriors with a tweet on Tuesday that expressed frustration over finding something to wear for the film’s red carpet premiere.
The “Saturday Night Live” cast member’s tweet reads, “It’s so funny how there are no designers wanting to help me with a premiere dress for the movie. Hmmm that will change and I remember everything.”
When fans and media outlets began picking up the tweet, and interpreting it is a slight against the fashion industry for not catering to women of her height, race, age or some combination of the three, some came to Jones’ defense, while others, like Bryanboy, took offense.
The blogger and social media influencer who has appeared on “America’s Next Top Model” tweeted, “What an entitled actress! She got paid money for her work, please use that money like the rest of us — go shopping!”
Popular designer and “Project Runway” alum Christian Siriano, meanwhile, responded by offering to make Jones a dress.
Jones accepted and, on Thursday, the designer and comedian took turns posting pictures on social media of their fashion collaboration.
In response to the conversation spurred by Jones’ initial tweet and his decision to make her a dress, Siriano tweeted, “It shouldn’t be exceptional to work with brilliant people just because they’re not sample size. Congrats aren’t in order, a change is.”
