Leslie Jones On Twitter Trolls: “Hate Speech & Freedom Of Speech, Two Different Things”

Leslie Jones became a trending topic this week after casting a light on social media trolls. The Ghostbusters actress signed off of Twitter after growing weary with the racist and sexist messages piling up in her mentions.

“I feel like I’m in a personal hell. I didn’t do anything to deserve this. It’s just too much. It shouldn’t be like this. So hurt right now,” she wrote before taking a break, which sparked the hashtag #LoveForLeslieJ. In response to the hate driven attack on the comedian, fans took to their accounts to praise Jones for her talent, beauty and vibrant personality.

The Saturday Night Live star has since emerged from her brief Twitter-cation, unable to resist live tweeting about one of her favorite shows Game of Thrones.

Jones also appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers on Thursday (July 21) to talk about the aftermath of her Twitter ordeal.

“If I hadn’t said anything, nobody would’ve ever knew about this. All those people still would have an account,” she said in reference to Twitter’s decision to ban several users that participated in the campaign launched by Milo Yiannopoulous.

After thanking fans for supporting her throughout her latest run-in with online abuse, which she says she has unfortunately become familiar with, Jones had a message for critics who insisted that people have a right to say what they want without consequences. “Hate speech and freedom of speech, two different things.”
