Lifetime orders Whitney Houston family reality show -- too ghoulish?

Lifetime has ordered a reality show following Whitney Houston’s family in the wake of the pop singer’s death.

The Houston Family Chronicles promises to follow “those closest to the pop music icon as they try to pick up the pieces after her untimely death.” The project is focused around Whitney’s manager and sister-in-law Pat Houston and her husband, Whitney’s brother Gary, the couple’s daughter Rayah, Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina and her mother Cissy Houston. According to the release, the show will focus on Pat and Gary as they “take on their greatest challenge, supporting and guiding Bobbi Kristina as she faces the world alone, without the one person she relied on the most, her Mother.”

Pat Houston suggested in a statement that the project predates Houston’s death, though clearly the concept revolves around that fallout from her demise and it seems unlikely the show would have been ordered if Houston was still alive.

“I have been working with [producers] Simmons-Shelley over the past few years developing a project suitable for myself and our family,” Pat Houston said in a statement. “The unexpected passing of Whitney certainly affects the direction of the show. However, it is my hope that others will be enlightened as they watch our family heal and move forward.”
