Lili Reinhart says people don’t ‘know sh**’ about her relationship status with Cole Sprouse
The mystery of whether or not Riverdale co-stars Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse have broken up has deepened. Though the actors say people don’t “know sh**” about their relationship status, a new article in W claims that they did indeed “part ways romantically” and notes that Sprouse and Reinhart requested solo interviews for their cover story.
Days after it was reported that they broke up after two years of dating, the pair appear in a very sexy shot on the cover of W magazine. While promoting the joint interview on social media, they both slammed the gossip around their relationship and purported breakup — though the gossip includes that very cover story in W.
Reinhart shared the cover along with a fierce and feisty caption that said, “BREAKING: A reliable source has confirmed that none of you know sh**.”
Sprouse’s post poked fun at the “sources” who are feeding the gossip about the pair, writing, “UNPRECEDENTED. Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart consume the flesh of ‘reliable sources’ to fuel their bacchanalian sex cult.”
Their followers applauded their posts, including some of their famous friends, including Camila Mendes and Keke Palmer.
And fans applauded them for their epic clap back.
Though the exact target of the pair’s ire is unclear — there have been a lot of outlets reporting on their purported split — it could be directed at the magazine that they are covering. In what appears to be a last-minute rewrite of W’s cover story, it’s noted that the sit-down took place two months before the “two would part ways romantically.” It listed signs that pointed to the fact that they were “uncoupling” (for example, they asked to be interviewed separately for the story). The writer noted that, in hindsight, it “might have been connected to the two of them being uncertain about their future together.”
However, it seems the interviewer himself hedged. For instance, he added a “maybe” before noting they were “no longer a couple” — seemingly not knowing more than the rest of the world. (Their reps haven’t commented on the breakup rumors.)
For the story, the pair — who play Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones on the popular show — did open up about their relationship. She talked about how Sprouse urged her to keep it private from the world — and she’s glad she largely did.
“No one knows how long we’ve been together, and no one will until we’re ready to say it. No one knows how we fell in love, except for our close friends and us. It’s really special,” she said.
Sprouse went so far as to say any buzz about their love life, true or false, isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
“I think part of the fun that the audience had, and still has, is going: What’s up with them right now?” he said. “It’s interesting! But in all honesty, my own happiness and her happiness come before caring about what people are saying.”
Their breakup was reported on Monday — after they appeared together at Comic-Con but ignored each other at an industry party. In the days since, there have been countless headlines speculating about what went wrong. There was a report it was “messy” and friends saw it coming. Another story made the point that he dumped her.
But take it all with a grain of salt, per Reinhart’s request.
