Live-action American Girl doll movie in the works from MGM, Mattel
The American Girl dolls are headed to the big screen once again.
MGM and toy company Mattel announced Friday they have partnered to produce a live-action feature adaptation of the popular line of dolls and books. A release date, casting information, and plot details have yet to be revealed.
American Girl characters were first introduced in 1986, and have since sold over 32 million dolls and 157 million books around the world. Abigail Breslin first brought the franchise to theaters at the center of New Line Cinema’s Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, which grossed $17.7 million at the domestic box office in 2008.
“American Girl is a timeless and iconic brand that is part of the fabric of families all over the world,” said Jonathan Glickman, MGM’s motion picture president, via press statement. “We look forward to working with our partners at Mattel and PICTURESTART to bring this cross-generational film to audiences all over the globe.”
Mattel Films, MGM and PICTURESTART’s Erik Feig are set to produce, with MGM’s co-president of production Cassidy Lange will oversee production with Mattell Films’ executive producer Robbie Brenner.
Earlier this year, Mattel also announced that it would team with Warner Bros. to produce a long-gestating live-action imagining (which once saw Fast & Furious director Justin Lin attached to direct) of its popular Hot Wheels line of car-themed toys.
