Love Is Blind’s Sara Wonders If Ben Was Honest About Religion, Says She Was ‘Conflicted’ Before Wedding
Love Is Blind star Sara Carton reflected on her relationship with Ben Mezzenga, admitting she had concerns that he wasn’t honest with her about the importance of religion in his life and she had second thoughts about getting married.
Throughout the course of season 8, fans watched Sara, 29, and Ben, 28, have personal conversations about serious topics including politics and religion.
As the couple got to know each other over the course of the experience, Sara told Us Weekly that she feared she was “expecting too much” or being too “harsh” with Ben while asking questions about his values. While Ben said that his faith was important to him and he regularly goes to church, Sara said she was more spiritual and wasn’t attached to religious practices.
During one episode released on Friday, February 28, fans watched Sara accompany Ben to a service.
“At the time, I thought he was being truthful saying like, ‘It’s OK. I don’t want you to ever feel obligated,’ I also know it’s important to him,” she told the outlet. “It’s very interesting watching the episodes back because I realize how important religion really is for him in the last couple episodes, and I never heard that from him [during the experiment]. … You would think someone religious or with that [level of] spirituality would want their partner to have the same level.”
Not only did Sara admit that she and Ben weren’t on the same page when it came to religion, but she also shared that she had concerns going into their wedding.
“I was very conflicted,” she said of her mindset ahead of the nuptials. “I was trying to soak in all this information that I was receiving in such little time to make such an important decision.”
Sara added that it was an “overwhelming” process for her, and she didn’t know how to work through her strong feelings for someone she had gotten engaged to so quickly.
“You love this person and you’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is my person. This is a beautiful concept and it’s working for me,'” the Netflix star said. “And then you’re trying to get every little detail [about them].”
While fans will have to wait until episode 12 on March 7 to see if Sara and Ben get married, the pair hit many roadblocks during their time on the show.
During episode 9, Sara and Ben watched a woman named Andra Berghoff, who claimed to have previously dated him, allege that he has treated women terribly in the past.
Andra did not directly name Ben in the video, which was uploaded in March 2024. However, she mentioned that one of the cast members played baseball for the University of Minnesota. Ben is the only season 8 cast member to have done so, which made it clear she was speaking about him.
Ben addressed the situation during episode 9, telling Sara that he blocked Andra because he didn’t “want to give her any ability to do anything with me if she decides to release my name or anything.” Additionally, Ben claimed that he hadn’t talked to Andra in more than four years and insisted that she was “making stuff up.”
Sara reflected on learning about the revelation while speaking to Us Weekly on Tuesday, February 25. “I knew I had to take it seriously and it was always in the back of my head. But also, I’m an enneagram 2 — naturally a caregiver. I was protecting Ben. I was protecting our relationship, and at the time, I was like, ‘I honestly don’t wanna talk about this more than what we need to, but we obviously need to talk about the facts and I do have questions,”’ she recalled of her reaction to Andra’s allegations. “And so when he was saying he doesn’t remember, it’s like, ‘OK, then you need to tell me at least off camera what you do remember.’”
