There's a lot more to the story of how Love Is Blind season 8 cast member Sara Carton discovered the TikTok video accusing her fiancé Ben Mezzenga of mistreating women in the past.
Netflix's reality dating series showed Sara receiving the video, made by TikTok user Andra Berghoff, while sitting on the couch in her and Ben's shared apartment in episode 9. While the video never named Ben, there was enough information that clearly identified him as the subject, and Ben confirmed it was about him. He claimed the woman was someone he met on Tinder in the past; that they dated, but never "hooked up;" that he hadn't seen her in more than four years; and that she was "making up stuff" about how he "manipulated her." He said that the woman was "overreacting" about being ghosted... but he also said he didn't remember exactly what happened with her, which didn't sit right with Sara.

"What happened was, we were at a brewery with his friends, and so I left to give them time to talk with one another," she says. "I was outside with my assistant producer and I was on my phone. I was scrolling, and then I receive that TikTok in the Love Is Blind girls' group chat. They're like, 'Oh my gosh, this is about Ben.'"
Sara watched the video immediately and was surprised to see "hundreds of comments" in the short time since it had been posted. "She never says the name in the TikTok, but in the comments everyone was saying it was him," Sara says. "So I was just very confused of how do these people just assume this is Ben? And then also, how do this many people know Ben? It was very confusing, I was trying to weigh everything. And then of course, he's my fiancé at the time, and I loved him, so I needed to hear his side of the story."
Getting to the bottom of that TikTok was "a very difficult thing to manage," Sara says. But she clarifies that her conversation with Ben about it happened very differently than how it's portrayed on TV.

"I showed him the TikTok at the brewery first, and that's when my assistant producer, of course, told my producer about the situation, so then they split us apart," Sara says. "We had to go back to the apartment and then film us talking about the TikTok, so that actually wasn't his first time seeing it, it wasn't my first time seeing it. And then when we were on the couch, that's when we noticed there was a second TikTok made talking about how he blocked her, and so that told me, 'Okay, this is actually about Ben.' That was hard."
Listening to Ben vaguely explain his side of the story only made things worse for Sara, because she wasn't getting the clear answers she was searching for.
"I definitely was skeptical the whole time," she says. "I've trusted Ben, so I wanted to continue trusting him. But of course, this TikTok I needed to keep in the back of my mind. I wasn't going to dismiss it or disregard it, by any means. I just felt very conflicted and there were feelings involved, and I didn't want to end the relationship just because of this one thing when we were so happy. It wouldn't feel right to me to just immediately drop it."

Sara laughs at how she's "constantly giving the benefit of the doubt" in relationships, for better or for worse. "That's just who I am — I need to learn about that and be better about that," she says. "I didn't like his answers, but at the time, it was enough for me to think, 'It was four years ago. Hopefully that was the truth. I'm going to trust his word.' But that's when I told him, 'If there's anything else that comes out of this that you're not telling me, I can't trust you.' If there was a second or third thing coming out, it wouldn't have worked."
As for whether she thinks more happened between Ben and Andra, Sara actually doesn't want to know further details. "It could be anything, but I really didn't care to figure that out," she explains. "I'm not going to go digging. I left it there."
The first nine episodes of Love Is Blind season 8 are streaming now on Netflix. Episodes 10-12 come out Feb. 28 and the finale drops March 7.
