Macaulay Culkin says he no longer dreads Father's Day now that he's a dad
Macaulay Culkin, who is estranged from his dad, Kit Culkin, no longer dreads Father's Day.
“If you know a little bit about me then you’d know I’ve had a complicated relationship with Father’s Day in the past,” Culkin began an Instagram post on June 5.
“But since becoming a papa myself, I’ve decided to reinvent the wheel,” he revealed. “Other than getting an hour or two of extra sleep, I try to make the day a celebration of my boys more than me. After all, they are the ones who made me a father (no offense to Brenda).”
The “Home Alone” actor, 43, and partner Brenda Song, 36, are parents of a 3-year-old son, Dakota. The couple welcomed another boy in 2022.
“In our house, Father’s Day isn’t held in as high regard as birthdays or Christmas but it does mop the floor of such holidays as St. Patrick’s Day, Valentine’s Day, and the 4th of July,” Culkin wrote, noting that he tries to do “fun things for the boys on Father’s Day.”
Culkin’s post was inspired by a Star Wars-themed Father’s Day care package he received, which was filled with goodies for his kiddos to enjoy.
“Father’s Day isn’t for me,” he wrote. “It’s for the people that make me feel like a father.”
During a 2018 appearance on the “WTF with Marc Maron,” podcast, Culkin described his own father as a “bad man.”
Kit, 79, and Culkin’s mom Patricia Brentrup split in 1995.
Macaulay’s brother, Kieran, is also estranged from Kit, whom he has called “not a good person.”
When Kieran won an Emmy Award in 2024 for his role in “Succession,” he teared up while thanking his mom for, “for giving me life and my childhood, which was great."
“She’s just an absolutely wonderful woman who took on raising seven kids in a studio apartment by herself,” Kieran told Page Six after his Emmy's win. He then took a jab at Kit. "There was a guy there — he didn’t do anything.”
