‘Mama’ Helmer Tapped For Sony’s ‘Shadow Of The Colossus’
Andrés Muschietti, the Argentine filmmaker behind Universal’s 2013 supernatural hit Mama, is taking the reins on Shadow of the Colossus for Sony Pictures. He’ll direct the adaptation of the acclaimed Playstation video game bestseller and oversee a script by Hanna writer Seth Lochhead. Joining Misher Films’ Kevin Misher as producer will be Muschietti’s sister, Mama producer and co-writer Barbara Muschietti.
The protagonist of the original action-adventure game is a young man who thinks his lover has died. Desperate to bring her back, he heads into a forbidden land, and summons a demon who can wake the dead. The price for bringing back his girl: slay 16 colossi that dominate this mystical place.

The Muschiettis earned a $146 million worldwide return on the $15 million budgeted Mama, which also played with supernatural specters and earned praise for its rich visual sense. The epic fantasy world of Shadow of the Colossus became a gamer favorite thanks to its immersive story and sweeping minimalist landscapes designed by Fumito Ueda. It’s sold over 2.7 million copies worldwide.
Chronicle‘s Josh Trank was previously attached to helm the project, but the in-demand director is already directing the Fantastic Four reboot at Fox and a Star Wars project for Disney. Michael De Luca and Andrea Giannetti will oversee the project for the studio.
