Man uses cumin instead of cinnamon in his oatmeal, others share hilarious spice mix-ups
A man found that his hilarious mix-up in the kitchen was more relatable than he imagined.
On Aug. 26, comedian Alex Falcone posted on Threads about an unfortunate error he made one morning while making breakfast.
“Cinnamon and Cumin shouldn’t have so many letters in common while being the same color in the same size jar,” Falcone wrote. “Anyway, if anybody would like the recipe for my new ‘fajita-spiced oatmeal’ let me know.”
Savory oatmeal is actually a thing, even including cumin, but it’s definitely not the flavor profile Falcone was expecting.
The funnyman was also not anticipating that he would receive tons of responses — as it turns out, this type of confusion in the kitchen is a common occurrence:
One poster even included a visual aid:
“Relatedly, I also recommend putting on one’s glasses before preparing a morning smoothie,” wrote that person, sharing a pair of similar-looking cartons of almond milk and chicken stock.
Others also shared their non-food-related mix-up stories, with one parent sharing that they shuffled their diaper rash cream with toothpaste while taking care of their little one, among other less-than-minty-fresh experiences.
The comedian later remarked that people made it “one of the funniest comment sections” he’s ever had the honor of hosting.
“Thank you all for screwing up too and making me feel better,” he added.
For Falcon, the outpouring of empathy for his spice-based screw-up came as a huge relief.
“When I posted, I was like, ‘Well, I’m the dumbest person,’” Falcone tells TODAY.com. “Then I spent the day getting the validation that everybody has made this mistake at least once, and sometimes so badly that it became family legend.”
And he’s right: From “cayenne raisin toast debacle” to meatloaf mishaps, these kitchen kerfuffles seem to be a common occurrence for many families.
“What’s wonderful about this particular viral moment is that, with a few exceptions, it was mostly supportive,” Falcone says. “Instead of just cringing about my stupid mistake, I spent the whole day watching notifications roll in that made me laugh.”
This particular spice mix-up is actually pretty common, if the internet is to be believed. Folks from 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 all posted about making the same error. In fact, someone made the same error the comedian did just yesterday.
And if you’re wondering if he tossed his morning oats or not, Falcone says he “ate the whole thing.”
“I’m not a waster,” he added.
