How many Pokémon are there? We counted every generation of Pokémon, including Scarlet and Violet.
For 27 years, the Pokémon video games have allowed players to discover and explore new worlds and creatures. Each generation brings its own additions to the ever-growing Pokédex, and that number continues to climb.
With Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's downloadable content expansion "The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero," there may be even more for trainers to encounter. So, grab your Poké Balls because it's time to catch 'em all and see how many Pokémon there are in total.
How many Pokémon are there?
According to Bulbapedia, there are 1025 Pokémon spread across nine generations that have been released since 1996. The eighth generation added 96, while the latest generation added 120 new Pokémon.
Following its release on Nov. 18, 2022, "Pokémon Scarlet” and “Pokémon Violet" kicked off the ninth generation.

Generation I
The first generation of Pokémon began in 1996, introducing the first 151 Pokémon of the series. “Pokémon Red,” “Pokémon Green," “Pokémon Blue” and “Pokémon Yellow” are the core franchise games of the first generation.
Generation II
Pokémon’s second generation, starting in 1999, added 100 new Pokémon, bringing the total up to 251. It features core games “Pokémon Gold,” “Pokémon Silver” and “Pokémon Crystal."
Generation III
Generation III in 2002 brought the total Pokémon to 386 after its addition of 135 new species. It added “Pokémon Ruby,” “Pokémon Sapphire,” “Pokémon FireRed,” “Pokémon LeafGreen” and “Pokémon Emerald” to its core games.
Generation IV
Starting in 2006, Pokémon’s fourth generation added 107 new Pokémon species, raising the total to 493. This generation features “Pokémon Diamond,” “Pokémon Pearl,” “Pokémon Platinum,” “Pokémon HeartGold” and “Pokémon SoulSilver.”
Generation V
156 new Pokémon were added in Generation V, reaching 649 total Pokémon across all games. “Pokémon Black,” “Pokémon White,” “Pokémon Black 2” and “Pokémon White 2” were all released during this generation, starting in 2010.
Generation VI
Beginning in 2013, Generation VI added the fewest Pokémon so far with 72 new species bringing the total count to 721: “Pokémon X,” “Pokémon Y,” “Pokémon Omega Ruby” and “Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.”
Generation VII
There were 88 new Pokémon added in this generation, totaling 809 Pokémon after it began in 2016. This generation features “Pokémon Sun,” “Pokémon Moon,” “Pokémon Ultra Sun,” “Pokémon Ultra Moon,” “Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu!” and “Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!”
Generation VIII
Generation VIII, added 96 Pokémon to reach 905. This generation features “Pokémon Sword,” “Pokémon Shield,” the paired expansion passes for both, “Pokémon Brilliant Diamond” and “Pokémon Shining Pearl."
“Pokémon Legends: Arceus," released in 2022, added seven new Pokémon species.
Generation IX
Generation IX added 120 Pokémon, including the new starter trio of sprigatito, fuecoco and quaxly, to the Pokédex bringing the total to 1025. "Pokémon Scarlet" and "Pokémon Violet" are the primary paired versions for this generation where players can explore the Paldea region.
In fall and winter 2023, a downloadable content expansion "The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero" introduced other new Pokémon into gameplay, including legendaries Ogerpon, Terapagos, Okidogi, Munkidori and Fezandipiti?.
