Mariah Carey's show-stopping 'Lip Sync Battle' appearance
Mariah Carey literally dropped into Lip Sync Battle this week as Darren Criss and Jermaine Dupri duked it out to tunes of the legendary diva.
While Criss and Dupri were joint lip-syncing Carey’s “Emotions,” the singer descended from above the stage on a giant butterfly swing and took the spotlight. When asked what she thought about the guys’ performances, Carey called out Dupri who, for his solo performance, did “Shake It Off,” a song he produced. “You forgot the words to ‘Shake It Off,’ which we wrote together,” Carey told Dupri. “You forgot some of the words, but I’ve done that myself, so it’s OK. I love you and I thank you so much and it was a wonderful representation, is what I thought.” Carey then turned to Criss and simply said, “And darling, the ensemble!”
Criss, who lip-synced “Heartbreaker,” dressed in a full-on Mariah costume — head-to-toe, wig-to-heels. He rocked the low-rise flared jeans and belly chain, then stopped midway through the performance to transform himself into Jay-Z for the rap verse.
But back to the true star of the night. Host LL Cool J asked Carey about her Las Vega residency, which she described as her fans’ “second home,” and about her new single “GTFO.” The lyrics, which tell a former lover to “get the f*** out,” were “for laughs,” Carey told the host. She clarified that she wasn’t “taking it too seriously” but had figured, “why not say something you really mean?”
In the end, Criss took home the coveted LSB belt and accepted it on behalf of Carey, who told him, “I think you wear it well, and you should definitely be champ all the time.”
Lip Sync Battle airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on the Paramount Network.
