With the mass exodus at One Chicago (Fire‘s Brett and P.D.‘s Upton are just a couple characters fans saw leave recently), there’s concern over whether longtime cast members could exit too, especially fan-favorites like Chicago P.D.‘s Marina Squerciati.

Squerciati plays Officer Kim Burgess, a former flight attendant turned patrol officer, on Chicago P.D. She’s one of four original cast members on Chicago P.D. along with Jason Beghe (Sergeant Hank Voight); Patrick Fleuger (Adam Ruzek); and LaRoyce Hawkins (Kevin Atwater.)
Chicago P.D. is NBC’s police procedural drama that follows the personal and professional lives of patrol officers and detectives at the Chicago Police Department’s fictional 21st District and Intelligence Unit. The series — which premiered in 2014 and is created by Dick Wolf, the same mind behind the Law & Order and FBI franchises — is part of NBC’s One Chicago world, which also includes Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.
Since her One Chicago debut a decade ago, Burgess has been a fan favorite among fans, especially for her relationship with her fellow officer, Ruzek. But after a string of recent exits in One Chicago (including Chicago P.D.‘s Tracy Spiridakos/Hailey Upton, and Chicago Fire‘s Kara Killmer/Sylvie Brett and Alberto Rosende/Blake Gallo), it’s understandable why viewers are worried about Burgess future on the series and whether Marina Squerciati could be leaving Chicago P.D. too. Is Marina Squerciati leaving Chicago P.D.? Read on for what she’s said about Burgess’ future in One Chicago.
Is Marina Squerciati leaving Chicago P.D.?
No, Squerciati isn’t leaving Chicago P.D. — at least, not anytime soon. Squerciati, who’s played Officer Kim Burgess since Season 1 of Chicago P.D., confirmed she isn’t leaving the series in an interview with TV Insider in January 2024. “As far as I know, I’m still here,” she said.
If Squerciati was to leave, she would be the second Chicago P.D. cast member to exit in 2024 after Tracy Spiridakos, who played Detective Hailey Upton. News broke of Spiridakos’ departure from Chicago P.D. in October 2023. She officially departed in the Season 11 finale.
Burgess most recently sparked speculation she was leaving Chicago P.D. in Season 12, Season 6, “Pawns,” in which Detective Mariel Suarez offers Burgess a job as a detective for the Chicago Police Department after 10 seasons as an officer. The catch is that she would have to leave the Intelligence Unit — and the rest of the Chicago P.D. crew — because of Suarez belief that Burgess’ boss, Sergeant Hank Voight, would stunt her growth as a detective.
Squerciati confirmed that she wasn’t leaving Chicago P.D. in an interview with TV Insider in November 2024 in which she suggested that Burgess still has a lot of story to tell now that she’s becoming a detective. “I think that it’s been a long time coming,” Squerciati said. “I think she’s really excited. I think she’s really nervous. When you want something so bad, do you kill it? I don’t know. I think she deserves it and hope she gets it.”
She continued, “Burgess is sort of put to the test with the politics and the dirt that she doesn’t realize how much Voight shields her from in the force that has sort of tainted or made other people grow to be stronger. It could go both ways. and I don’t know that Burgess exactly knows how to deal with it quite yet.”
Squerciati confirmed in an Instagram post on the set of Chicago P.D. August 20, 2024, that she was returning as Burgess for Season 12 and had not left the One Chicago franchise.
“And just like that…we back! Missed you loads. #ChicagoPD #HIATUS #IGhiatus #sorryaboutthat #myboys #mycrew #family #wolfpack #paddyflueger #laroycehawkins #voight #burzek #jasonbeghe,” she captioned a series of photos of her with Fleuger, Jason Beghe (Sergeant Hank Voight), and Benjamin Levy Aguilar (Officer Dante Torres).
Squerciati also shared an Instagram photo the day of Chicago P.D. Season 12’s premiere further confirming she was still on the series. “We don’t normally smile on CPD, but when we do it’s PREMIER DAY!! #chicagopd #Torgess #tvshows #nbc #wolfpack @wolfentertainment @nbconechicago,” she captioned a photo with Aguilar and retired police officer Brian Luce, who serves as a technical advisor on the show.
Ruzek and Burgess, also known by fans as Burzek, have dated on and off since Chicago P.D. Season 1 and got engaged for a third time in Season 11. In an interview with NBC Insider in May 2023, Ruzek opened up about why he believes viewers have connected with Burzek so much. “I think it has to do with balance,” he said. “I think it’s just they balance each other out. They just collectively calm each other down and, you know, validate each other’s strengths and make up for each other’s weaknesses.”
In an interview with Us Weekly in September 2024, Fleuger hinted that Burgess and Ruzek will get married in Season 12, though they may not have a traditional wedding. “It’s not really our show [style] to have [a wedding],” he said. “I don’t know how you squeeze that into our show. It feels like it’s probably gonna be more suggested than it is something you’re gonna see on screen.”
Showrunner Gwen Sigan also teased Burgess and Ruzek’s unconventional wedding. “I feel like Ruz is kinda, like, ‘Should we just go to the courthouse? Let’s just keep it simple. I don’t need the whole to do. I just wanna be with you.’ That’s how I think Ruzek would do it,” she told Us Weekly.
