Martin Scorsese reportedly wants Leonardo DiCaprio to star in Frank Sinatra biopic

A Frank Sinatra biopic has reportedly been mapped out in Oscar-winning director Martin Scorsese's future plans accompanied by two A-list stars who he wants in the story of Hoboken's most famous son.

Originally reported by Variety, the 81-year-old director has planned out his next several projects and plans to shoot two films back-to-back. The first film will be about Jesus, with production expected to begin later this year, and the second will be a Frank Sinatra biopic.

In planning out his cast, Scorsese has chosen Leonardo DiCaprio to play Sinatra and Jennifer Lawrence to play his second wife, actress Ava Gardner, according to Variety.

However, Scorsese still has some roadblocks in the way before he can go ahead with the film as Tina Sinatra, Frank's daughter, controls his estate and has not yet granted the director her approval.

A singer, actor, and Hoboken native, Frank Sinatra is an iconic figure. He was America's first teen heartthrob who started his career in Hoboken in the 1930s and 1940s.

"Though the talented singer moved out of town after he achieved fame, his Hoboken upbringing shaped his early career and imparted a cocky but relatable image, which helped make him an icon," says the Hoboken Historical Museum. "The trajectory of his family's life in Hoboken reflected the opportunities and divisions in early twentieth century urban America."

In 1939, Sinatra married Nancy Barbato, Tina Sinatra's mother. They were together until 1951 when Gardner, set to be played by Lawrence, supposedly broke up their marriage. He married Gardner later that same year.

This is not the first time that Scorsese has talked about a Frank Sinatra biopic. In 2009, as reported by The Guardian, DiCaprio was rumored to be the director's pick for the lead. Then, in 2010, Scorsese told media outlets that he was planning to cast Al Pacino and Robert De Niro as Sinatra and Dean Martin, outlining his plans for the film as a darker, more complicated story of Sinatra's life. The Sinatra family reportedly did not agree to that, leading Scorsese to pull the plug on his plans in 2017, according to a report by the Toronto Sun. "We can't do it," he told Toronto Sun in an in interview for his film "Silence." "I think it is finally over ... Open it up again and I'm there."

As for this time around, Apple is reportedly interested in financing the film, according to Variety, as they funded Scorsese's $215 million "Flower Moon" which was nominated for 10 Oscars last year. However, Sony is currently looking like the frontrunner.
