Marvel star Xochitl Gomez's 'scary and crazy' ankle injury during rehearsal stressed out her 'DWTS' pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy
Xochitl Gomez reflected on the ankle injury she got during a "Dancing With the Stars" rehearsal.
"I was a little stressed," her "DWTS" pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy told Insider.
Chmerkovskiy says he feels responsible for her, but she's just baffled People Magazine thinks he's sexy.
On November 6, Marvel star Xochitl Gomez shared a TikTok video of her dress rehearsal for music video night on "Dancing With the Stars."
Gomez and her pro dance partner Val Chmerkovskiy were practicing in the "DWTS" ballroom when, as seen in the video, Gomez landed on her ankle wrong while attempting what appeared to be a cartwheel.
Gomez confirmed in the comments of the video that she'd continue in the competition, and she performed remarkably well in the aftermath of her injury. She and Chmerkovskiy received a score of 34 out of 40 for her live jazz performance to Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" the next night, despite a wardrobe malfunction. Her team also won the group dance round that week.
In a joint interview with Chmerkovskiy ahead of Tuesday's Whitney Houston night on "DWTS," Gomez described the moment she injured herself as "scary and crazy" — and said her ankle "looks scary and crazy" too. But she and Chmerkovskiy confirmed that they aren't changing any choreography in their routines because of the injury.
It's clear from their banter that Chmerkovskiy, 37, has a playful relationship with the 17-year-old "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" star, and he told Insider he was immediately worried for his partner.
"I was a little stressed. I also felt a bit of responsibility, obviously not just as her dance partner or teacher. I'm responsible for her," he said, noting that it was also a little bit sad to think that their "DWTS" journey could end after they've come so far.
Gomez said she's been too busy dancing to talk to her friend and fellow Marvel actor Iman Vellani about "The Marvels" tease that fans hope might bring the two of them back into the MCU sooner rather than later. She understandably spends most of her day with Chmerkovskiy and joked that she was surprised when the 37-year-old husband (who married fellow "DWTS" pro Jenna Johnson in 2019) and new father was named one of People's Sexiest Men Alive in 2023.
"Let's just be real. Let's just put California," she jokes about the territory the title claims to cover. "Guys, I don't know. I think someone pressed the wrong button and thought it was a different question."
Amidst their sibling-like spats, the pair told Insider they're not thinking about the finals yet, and instead try to approach the competition week-by-week.
They're excited to be back in hold for a tango to Houston's hit "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)." But Gomez admitted that it will be hard to compete in a cha cha dance-off against Charity Lawson after being on team Young'n Style with the former "Bachelorette" star last week.
"It just sucks because now I have to be against her," Gomez said.
