8:00 p.m. — “Previously on ‘The Masked Singer’!” In Episode 9, Beets, Gumball and Seal sang their hearts out in the Group B final. Following the studio audience vote, Seal came in third place and was forced to immediately unmask, revealing actor and musician Corey Feldman. Then, following a Battle Royale, Gumball defeated Beets. The duo was forced to “take it off,” revealing “American Idol” icons Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken. Who will unmask tonight? And who will advance to the semi-finals?
8:05 p.m. — The first quarter-finalist on stage tonight is Clock. In her clue package she says, “It’s incredible to be in the quarter-finals as the Group C champion! Winning against all these young whippersnappers still has this clock in shock. When I was younger, everyone loved to hear me sing, until I told them I wanted to do it for a living. Suddenly it was all, what?! Are you crazy?! You see, I was a young mother and most concerned was my own mom. She said, ‘How are you going to take care of these kids and sing at night clubs?’ But that all changed when she saw me sing one night. She was mesmerized. And from that moment on it was a family affair. She helped out where she could and now, my son actually works with me on tour. I’ve been able to stay on my feet all these years because of their support. Now tonight, I plan to get you on your feet because this clock is tickin’ for a spot in the semi-finals!”
8:10 p.m. — Clock is singing “Get On Your Feet” by Gloria Estefan. She’s working the stage and belting it out like a seasoned diva. Robin said that performance is going to be hard to beat. For an additional clue, Clock gets a phone call: “Hi, Mom. You never cease to amaze me. I’ve seen you perform thousands of times. I know you’re nervous tonight, but remember, you performed for the pope. Ken Jeong should be a piece of cake.” Clock gets emotional from the phone call from her son. The panelists guess Clock could be Stephanie Mills (Robin), someone from Sister Sledge (Jenny) or Shirley Bassey (Rita).
8:15 p.m. — Next up is Gumball. In his clue package he reveals, “I’m still amazed I made it to the quarter-finals. I wasn’t kidding when I told you I had doubts that I belonged on this stage. I think that is what landed me in the smackdown in the first round. But, that turned out to be the awakening I needed to dig deep. As much self-doubt as I have, I think I do have just as much fight in me. As someone who was an athlete, I felt like I was back on that field. I felt like it was time to leave it all on the stage. That’s why I’m singing ‘I’m Yours’ tonight. It’s my battle cry to this competition. I am all in now. I’m yours.”
8:20 p.m. — Gumball is singing “I’m Yours” by Jason Mraz. He has a great tone, although it’s not one of his most powerful performances. Jenny thinks he could be someone for a boy band. His phone is from his wife who says, “I’m so proud of you and watching you on that stage reminds me of your time spent off-Broadway. You’re really back in your element and I’m just so excited to watch. Go bring home that Golden Mask. I love you!” The panelists guess Gumball could be James Van Der Beek (Robin), Derek Hough (Jenny) or Taran Killam (Ken).
8:25 p.m. — Next up is Poodle Moth. In her clue package she reveals, “I was so disappointed when I lost the Battle Royale. So when the entire panel saved me, I was so grateful. Being saved reminds me of another time in my life when I was saved right when I needed it most. Before my big break, I had no cash, a credit card gaining interest and even had to borrow money for gas. I was afraid of answering my phone, just in case it was the debt collectors, again. Until one time I was this close to ignoring it, but for some reason, something in me picked up. And thank goodness because that call changed everything. I got my big break and, well, the rest is history. Now all these years later I’m here on the most fantastical stage, singing my heart out as the adorable Poodle Moth. And I’ve learned that you can’t put a price tag on fate.”
8:30 p.m. — Poodle Moth is singing “Price Tag” by Jessie J. Poodle Moth sounds a little different every time she sings and she’s switched up genres all season. It’s a fun performance, but not quite as emotional as some of her previous performances. Her phone call is her sister saying, “Is there anything you can’t do? Seriously. From performing in that costume to earning a Golden Globe nomination, your talents are endless. Keep singing your heart out. I love you to the moon and back.” Poodle Moth can’t believe they were able to find her sister. The panelists guess Poodle Moth could be Sheryl Crow (Rita), Riley Keough (Ken) or Chrissy Metz (Jenny).
8:35 p.m. — Completing the performances tonight is the Group A champion, Goldfish. In her clue package she reveals, “It feels incredible to be the Group A winner! The best part of being here is honestly getting to do what I love. I feel like I’ve been through a lot in my career. When you’re young and suddenly a role model, there’s a lot of pressure to live up to the expectations and grow up in front of the whole world. People wanted me to be one thing — perfect. But perfect is impossible. The one thing that I am is resilient. In Hollywood, you have to keep reinventing yourself. We’re not the same from our teenage years to our adult years. And thank God! Tonight I’m singing “Unforgettable” and it would mean the world to make it to the semi-finals. While they say goldfishes don’t have a great memory, this experience is one I will never forget.”
8:40 p.m. — Goldfish is singing “Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole. It’s a beautiful rendition that shows off the clarity and control of her voice. Jenny calls her a front-runner in this competition. For an extra clue, Goldfish gets a clue from her man. He says, “Hey babe, I’m so happy to see you thriving in this competition, but honestly, I knew you would all along. You never back down from a challenge and you absolutely love to perform live. The Golden Mask trophy’s got Goldfish’s name all over it. So proud of you babe.” The panelists thing Goldfish could be Nicole Scherzinger (Ken), Hilary Duff (Robin) or Julianne Hough (Jenny).
8:45 p.m. — Following the audience vote, two of tonight’s acts will be declared safe and two will have to compete in the smackdown for the third spot in the semi-finals. The two moving forward are Clock and Goldfish. That means Gumball and Poodle Moth will battle it out in the last smackdown of the season.
8:55 p.m. — Poodle Moth and Gumball each put their own unique spin on “If I Could Turn Back Time” by Cher. It’s a close battle, but someone has to go! After another round of voting, Poodle Moth loses this battle and Gumball advances to the semi-finals.
9:02 p.m. — Before Poodle Moth unmasks, each panelist submits their final guess: Shania Twain (Robin), Melissa McCarthy (Ken), Chrissy Metz (Jenny) and Faith Hill (Rita). At last, Poodle Moth pulls off her mask and reveals herself as Golden Globe nominee for “This is Us,” Chrissy Metz! Jenny was right! And that’s a wrap for this quarter-finals episode.
