Meet the 6 ‘Game of Thrones’ stars in Emmy contention

Peter Dinklage became a force to be reckoned with at the Emmys during his tenure as Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” with the actor winning four wins from eight nominations. The cast of “Game of Thrones” was so good, however, that many of them are still Emmys forces even after the show ended and they’ve moved on to different projects. Let’s take a look at the “Game of Thrones” alumni who could compete at this year’s Emmys.

Jonathan Pryce — “The Crown” and “Slow Horses”
Another “Thrones” guest actor who deserved some awards attention for his magnetic turn as the High Sparrow; he was one of the show’s most hissable villains. Now, he’s in line for a Drama Supporting Actor bid for portraying Prince Phillip in “The Crown.” Pryce’s Prince Phillip is more of a supporting player in the show than Matt Smith‘s version was, but he does have some notable moments including his developing “intellectual friendships” with other women that he makes the Queen aware of. Pryce is third in our Emmys odds chart for Best Drama Supporting Actor, with only Billy Crudup and Jon Hamm (both “The Morning Show”) above him. Our other predicted nominees here are Tadanobu Asano (“Shōgun”), Khalid Abdalla (“The Crown”), Nathan Lane (“The Gilded Age”), Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), and Jack Lowden (“Slow Horses”). We are also predicting Pryce to secure a Best Drama Guest Actor citation for “Slow Horses,” alongside Nestor Carbonell (“Shōgun”), John Turturro (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Michael Emerson (“Fallout”), Kyle MacLachlan (“Fallout”), and Paul Dano (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”). This would be Pryce’s third and fourth Emmy nominations after bids in 1993 for “Barbarians at the Gate” and in 2010 for “Cranford.”

More from GoldDerby

Liam Cunningham — “3 Body Problem”
In “Thrones,” Cunningham played Ser Davos Seaworth — the Hand of the King to Stannis Baratheon and later to Jon Snow. Davos was one of the most likable characters in the show thanks to Cunningham’s grounded and humorous portrayal of an everyday man in a fantastical, larger world. He plays Thomas Wade, the Chief of the MI6, in Netflix’s “3 Body Problem.” The show follows a group of scientists who partner with a detective to face an existential planetary threat. Cunningham is outside of our predicted nominees for Best Drama Supporting Actor. This would be Cunningham’s first Emmy nomination.

Conleth Hill — “3 Body Problem”
Cunningham co-stars in “3 Body Problem,” which is from “Thrones” creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Hill played Master of Whisperers Varys in “Thrones” and here portrays Pope Gregory XIII in what is a flashy guest role for Hill. However, Hill is outside of our predicted nominees for Best Drama Guest Actor, the same category we think Pryce will pick up a bid in. Hill may have to wait for his first Emmy nomination, too.

Maisie Williams — “The New Look”
Arya Stark actress Williams appeared in all eight seasons of “Thrones” as the youngest Stark sister. She had a terrific character arc, going from a boisterous little girl to a stone-cold killer with fierce loyalty toward her family. Williams was nominated for her turn as Arya in 2016 and 2019 — both for Best Drama Supporting Actress. This is the category she is hoping to secure a nomination in this year, with her Apple TV+ show “The New Look.” She plays Christian Dior‘s sister, Catherine, in this post-WWII epic set in Paris when Dior created his fashion line and dealt with rival Coco Chanel. Williams is just outside of our predicted nominees here, however: Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), Lesley Manville (“The Crown”), Christine Baranski (“The Gilded Age”), Greta Lee (“The Morning Show”), Moeka Hoshi (“Shōgun”), Kristin Scott Thomas (“Slow Horses”), Cynthia Nixon (“The Gilded Age”), and Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”).

Emilia Clarke — “Secret Invasion”
Clarke was one of the big-name stars in “Thrones,” playing fan-favorite character Daenerys Targaryen, who eventually heads over to Westeros in her lifelong quest to conquer and rule the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys had a rapid character arc in the final season of “Thrones” that gave some fans whiplash but Clarke’s performances as Dany were always top-drawer. All four of her Emmy nominations came for “Thrones.” The first three were for Drama Supporting Actress in 2013, 2015, and 2016 while the fourth came in 2019 for Drama Actress. She stars in the Disney+ MCU show “Secret Invasion,” which depicts the secret invasion of Earth by the Skrulls, a race of shape-shifting aliens. Clarke played Skrull warrior G’iah in the series’ main female role. She is competing for a nomination for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress but is just outside of our predicted nominees: Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), Brie Larson (“Lessons in Chemistry”), Juno Temple (“Fargo”), Sofia Vergara (“Griselda”), Kate Winslet (“The Regime”), and Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs the Swan”).

Tobias Menzies — “Manhunt”
Menzies played Edmure Tully in “Thrones.” He was the brother of Catelyn Stark and the uncle to Williams’ Arya. He was a bit of a buffoon in the show and spent the majority of the latter seasons off-screen in prison, although he did make an appearance in season eight. Apple TV’s limited series “Manhunt” depicts the literal manhunt for John Wilkes Booth, the assassin who murdered Abraham Lincoln. Menzies features in the lead role as Edwin Stanton, the man heading up the search for Booth. Our current predicted nominees for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor are Jon Hamm (“Fargo”), Andrew Scott (“Ripley”), Richard Gadd (“Baby Reindeer”), Tom Hollander (“Feud: Capote vs the Swans”), Matt Bomer (“Fellow Travelers”), and Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”). Menzies only Emmy nomination resulted in a victory — that was for Best Drama Supporting Actor in 2021 for his portrayal of Prince Phillip in “The Crown.”
