Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Step Out for Commonwealth Day — to See How Canadian Candy Is Made

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a sweet stop for Commonwealth Day!

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex met with a group of Canadians in London who showed them how they make maple taffy using syrup cooled on snow on Monday. It came as Harry and Meghan visited Canada House in London to mark Commonwealth Day. The event was aimed at celebrating the diverse community of young Canadians living in London and around the U.K.

Meghan, who is expecting her first child in late April, opted for a green coat with black floral embellishments by Erdem (headed by a Canadian fashion designer!). She paired the look with a pair of her go-to heels — her black Deneuve pumps by Aquazzura, and carried a Givenchy clutch. The mom-to-be completed her look with a chic side bun.

The expectant parents showed off their sweet bond during their arrival, with Harry chivalrously allowing Meghan to go first while placing a hand on her back as she stepped onto the curb – and she returned the affection, keeping a hand on his shoulder as they made their way inside.

The royal couple, who were last together in public on Wednesday when Harry surprised 12,000 kids by “dragging” his wife on stage to join him at a youth event, chatted to groups of young Canadians from the worlds of fashion, the arts, business and academic life. Harry and Meghan are keen to hear about their experiences as expats living in the U.K. as well as opportunities for young people working in the Commonwealth — the family of 53 nations linked to Britain.

The spring tradition of making the sweet candy from maple syrup came as part of a traditional “Cabane à sucre” or a “Sugar Shack.”

They also watched a special musical performance.

Meghan joined with a Commonwealth-based organization when she took part in a panel discussion on International Women’s Day on Friday. She was also announced as Vice President of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust alongside her husband Harry, who is President. The couple have made the Commonwealth a key part of their royal duties.

There is a strong, historic bond between the two countries with a dynamic and vibrant community of around 500,000 Canadians living across the U.K. (Canada is also holds a special place in Meghan’s heart, as she adopted Toronto as her home base for several years while filming Suits!)

Following their visit to Canada House, the royal parents-to-be will join other members of the royal family – including the Queen, Kate Middleton and Prince William – for the Commonwealth Service at Westminster Abbey.
