Meghan McCain 'grateful' Trump is president because she's successful on 'The View'
Meghan McCain attributes some of her success on The View to one of her foes: Donald Trump. In Ramin Setoodeh's book Ladies Who Punch, The View co-host says she's grateful to the president for one thing.
“If Trump wasn’t president, I don’t think I would be successful here,” she explains in the New York Times bestseller. McCain joined the show in the fall of 2017.
“For that reason, I guess I’m grateful that Trump is president,” McCain continued, in an excerpt obtained by People. “It’s just made my job a little easier because I know why it happened.”
John McCain's daughter also thinks she works on the ABC show because she's the first "real Republican" to sit on the panel.
“I think the reason I worked and other Republicans didn’t is because I’m the first real Republican that they hired,” McCain added, clarifying, “Yes, I think I’m more of a Republican than Elisabeth [Hasselbeck] is.”
She continued, “Nicolle Wallace changed parties. Candace Cameron was a social conservative. I don’t remember the other people who were on here.”
However, McCain doesn't believe The View is a ratings success solely because of the president.
“That I don’t concede to. Everyone is like, ‘Oh, you’re popular because Trump.’ I think everyone is more interested in politics,” she noted. “Young women are different now than when I was younger. Everyone is involved, civically engaged and informed. I think that’s also why the show is doing so well.”
The 34-year-old has made it clear she is no fan of Trump frequently bashing her father, even months after the late senator's passing.
“[Trump] spends his weekend obsessing over great men because he knows it and I know it and all of you know it, he will never be a great man. My father was his kryptonite in life, he’s his kryptonite in death,” McCain said on the show last month. “And I just thought, ‘Your life is spent on your weekends not with your family, not with your friends but obsessing, obsessing, over great men you could never live up to.’ That tells you everything you needed to know about his pathetic life right now.”
