Meghan Trainor: Untouchable tour hits Radio City Music Hall

“Radio City, you all ready to have a good night?” Meghan Trainor asked at the top of her show at New York City’s famed venue Saturday night. “All my ladies scream one time!” Then, a deafening roar of adolescents overpowered the 22-year-old pop star on stage — a banshee wail that was as loud as an AC/DC or My Bloody Valentine concert.

Since breaking out with her girl-power anthem “All About That Bass” in 2014 and scoring a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2016, Trainor has shown herself to be one of pop’s most likable and seemingly down-to-earth stars, one who’s also accrued a devoted fan base of young female fans. Sure, she doesn’t have the diva-esque gravitas of Beyoncé or Adele. But the professional songwriter-turned-recording artist does have bona fide chops — the Nantucket, Mass. native got her start penning tunes for Hunter Hayes, Rascal Flatts, and other Nashville artists — and it does take a special brand of artist to score two sold-out nights at a fabled venue like Radio City. At one point, she sounded overwhelmed when reflecting on Friday’s milestone: “Thank you for helping me go from being a songwriter in my bedroom to getting a Grammy for Best New Artist! I’ll never forget this night!”

Production-wise, Trainor’s Untouchable Tour looks like the most opulent cruise ship revue show you’ve ever seen: flawlessly executed but a little too rooted in Vaudevillian clichés. She’s backed by a smartly-dressed band, who ably performed her tunes, and she and her dancers glided across the stage with capable (if un-showy) choreography. Trainor made sure to make it as engaging a show as possible via a medium that matters most to her fans: social media. A giant screen broadcast home movies and photos the whole night — as if her own Snapchat was on a big screen — and the most eardrum-bursting roar was heard when Trainor captured her fans on her phone. But the best moments came when Trainor’s impressive vocals alone were in full bloom. Gorgeous renditions of “Hopeless Romantic” and “Just a Friend to You” proved you don’t always need a flashy production to turn out a great show. B
