Meryl Streep & Martin Short Are Bubbling Up Romance Rumors All Over Again After This Latest Outing
Ever since Meryl Streep‘s split from her longtime husband in 2023, media attention around her has only increased. After all, it’s the first time in over four decades that Hollywood’s most celebrated actress was single and potentially ready to mingle. Soon enough, fans started looking closely and asking themselves, “Is something going on with her and Martin Short?”
Streep and Short, who play onscreen love interests in Only Murders in the Building, were, in fact, spotted many times recently looking a tad too cozy to just be friends. In March, for example, they enjoyed a night out together attending a Broadway showing of Merrily We Roll Along. Could it be a friendly outing? Sure! Could it have been a date? Also yes!

And, most recently, Streep and Short attended the premiere of season four of their show on August 22. Both on and off the carpet, photos and videos of the two have fans sounding the alarms.
On the carpet, Streep and Short posed together just the two of them for pictures. In one video posted by The Hollywood Reporter, the Mamma Mia! star called Short over, they smiled in a side hug for pictures before Short drifted to the side holding her hand. They then got closer together again at the center of the carpet, posed for even more pictures, and were seen whispering to each other throughout.
Looking at the video, one X user didn’t hesitate to call them a couple. “A couple. In love. Perfect,” they wrote.
Outside of the red carpet, Streep and Short continued to look a little extra touchy. In one video shared by Deadline, they’re seen holding hands alongside their fellow co-star Steve Martin as they walked to the premiere after-party.
For many, their hand-holding was the confirmation they needed. “They’re holding hands! It’s true ??????,” wrote one X user. “I simply love living in a world where 75-year-old Meryl Streep is having a soft relationship launch with her 74-year-old boyfriend, Martin Short,” wrote another user.
“Steve Martin in this video is the definition of the 3rd wheel ??,” joked another.
Prior to this so-called “soft launch” of their relationship, Martin had denied any romance between him and the Oscar winner. “We’re not a couple, we are just very close friends,” he told Bill Maher on a January episode of his podcast, Club Random with Bill Maher. “[They] are just very good friends, nothing more,” a rep for Short reiterated to People at the time.
With the red carpet and after-party to prove it, it looks like we no longer believe him!
