Michigan Man Charged with Spraying Mouse Poison on Supermarket Produce

A Michigan man was charged with four counts of poisoning Thursday for allegedly spraying supermarket produce with a solution that contained mouse poison, FBI officials tell PEOPLE.

Kyle Bessemer, 29, allegedly confessed on Tuesday to spraying salad bars and produce sections of various supermarkets, according to a FBI press release obtained by PEOPLE. In addition to mouse poison, the solution allegedly contained hand sanitizer and water.

A press release from the Washtenaw County Prosecuting Attorney's office did not specify which supermarkets Bessemer is charged with contaminating.

On Sunday, the FBI requested the public's assistance in identifying a man allegedly seen on cameras in an Ann Arbor supermarket sprinkling a liquid on shopping carts.

After receiving tips, the FBI captured Bessemer on Tuesday and while in custody he allegedly confessed, the press release states.

Following the arrest, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development released a state advisory urging citizens to throw away potentially contaminated food from the suspected victimized supermarkets.

"Out of an abundance of caution and to protect public health and food safety, I encourage consumers to dispose of any foods purchased from salad bars, olive bars and ready-to-eat hot and cold food areas from these stores between mid-March and the end of April," said MDARD Director Jamie Clover Adams.

The MDARD says Bessemer may have also targeted other stores throughout the state including a Kroger in Flint, a Target and Whole Foods in Ann Arbor and a Walmart in Midland, Michigan.

Bessemer is being held on a $250,000 bond. Information on whether he has retained an attorney or entered a plea was unavailable as of press time.
