Who Has Miley Cyrus Dated? A Look at Her Past Relationships, From Liam Hemsworth to Maxx Morando
After finalizing her divorce from Liam Hemsworth in 2020, Miley Cyrus began dating drummer Maxx Morando in December 2021
Miley Cyrus has been in the spotlight since she began starring on Hannah Montana in 2006, and has continued to appear in projects and produce music since, even winning her first Grammy in 2024. Throughout her successful career, she’s made headlines for her onstage antics and high-profile relationships.
The outspoken star dated Nick Jonas and Justin Gaston during her years as a child star and eventually had relationships with Patrick Schwarzenegger and Cody Simpson. She split from actor Liam Hemsworth in August 2019 after several years of on-and-off-again dating and seven months of marriage.
Cyrus has been very open about her love life and sexuality, including her relationships with girlfriends Stella Maxwell and Kaitlynn Carter — she came out as pansexual in 2015.
"My whole life, I didn't understand my own gender and my own sexuality," she told Variety a year after coming out. "I always hated the word bisexual because that's even putting me in a box. I don't ever think about someone being a boy or someone being a girl."

Cyrus was first romantically linked to her boyfriend, musician Maxx Morando, in December 2021. Over two years later, a source confirmed to PEOPLE that the pair were living together and "very happy."
“Miley has changed a lot in the past couple of years. She seems more calm and harmonious. Everyone loves Maxx. He’s a great guy," the source said. "He’s private and doesn’t like being in the press. It’s been good for her.”
From her years-long relationship with Liam Hemsworth to her connection with her current boyfriend Maxx Morando, here's a look back at Miley Cyrus' dating history.
Nick Jonas
It was love at first sight for Cyrus and fellow Disney Channel star Nick Jonas. The actress wrote in her 2009 autobiography Miles to Go that the couple met at a charity benefit in June 2006.
"We became boyfriend and girlfriend the day we met," Cyrus told Seventeen magazine in 2008. "He was on a quest to meet me, and he was like, 'I think you're beautiful and I really like you.' And I was like, 'Oh, my gosh, I like you so much.' "
While the pair didn't confirm their romance while they were dating, Cyrus and Jonas were professionally linked. The Jonas Brothers opened for Cyrus' Best of Both Worlds tour in 2007 and appeared on an episode of Hannah Montana that same year.
The teen stars split at the end of 2007, and Cyrus confirmed that she and Jonas had dated a year later. "Nick and I loved each other," she told Seventeen. "We still do, but we were in love with each other. For two years he was basically my 24/7. But it was really hard to keep it from people. We were arguing a lot, and it really wasn't fun."
In 2008, Cyrus released her song "7 Things," which was rumored to be about her breakup with Jonas. The director of the music video, Brett Ratner, later dropped a not-so-subtle hint that Cyrus wore a "diabetes or medical necklace" given to her by the ex-boyfriend referenced in the song for the video. (Jonas has been open about having Type 1 diabetes since he was diagnosed with the disease in 2005.)
In 2015, Jonas referred to Cyrus as his "first crush."
Justin Gaston
In 2008, Cyrus began dating Justin Gaston, a model and country singer best known for his role as the love interest in Taylor Swift's "Love Story" music video. The pair met when her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, hosted Gaston's season of the singing competition Nashville Star.

In a 2009 interview with Glamour, Cyrus described her beau as "the most respectful and selfless person" she had ever known and "the best thing" that had happened to her in a long time. When they dated, Cyrus was 16 and Gaston 20 — and their age difference was a hot topic.
"I don't feel like I'm doing anything wrong," she said. "My fans already accept it — they just want me to be happy. And I haven't been that happy in a few years ... I don't feel like there's anything to hide. And I love him so much I don't really care."
The pair were last spotted together in June 2009 at a Hannah Montana wrap party in Los Angeles. A few days later, a source told PEOPLE the couple broke things off before Cyrus traveled to Georgia to film The Last Song.
Liam Hemsworth
Cyrus developed a close relationship with her The Last Song costar Liam Hemsworth. In August 2009, they were spotted kissing at an airport in Nashville — just a few days after wrapping the film.
"I'm not really a big lovey person. I'm not, like, mushy," Cyrus told PEOPLE the following year. "Liam was the first person that made me want to be in a real relationship."
The actors dated on and off for almost three years before Hemsworth proposed in May 2012. "I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam," Cyrus told PEOPLE. But in September 2013, Cyrus and Hemsworth announced that they had ended their engagement.
In January 2016, Cyrus and Hemsworth sparked reconciliation rumors when they spent time together at a music festival. Later that month, Cyrus posted a photo sporting her engagement ring. PEOPLE later confirmed their re-engagement. "Miley is beyond happy to be engaged to Liam again," a source said. "It might seem sudden, but they have been very close for the past few months."
On Dec. 23, 2018, the stars spontaneously got married at their home in Franklin, Tenn. Cyrus and Hemsworth confirmed their nuptials a few days later when they posted wedding portraits on Instagram.
"They don't have doubts about their relationship," a source later told PEOPLE. "They both wanted to get married. They have both matured a lot, and it seemed like the perfect time for them to get married."
But just seven months later, the couple announced their separation. "Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers," a rep for Cyrus shared with PEOPLE. Their divorce was finalized in January 2020.
That September, the singer opened up about her "very public divorce that f------ sucked" in an interview on the Joe Rogan Experience.
"What really sucked about it wasn't the fact that me and someone that I loved realized that we don't love each other the way that we used to anymore. That's okay, I can accept that," she said. "I can't accept the villainizing and just all those stories."
The singer continued, referencing her subsequent relationships, "There was a gap of time that [the public] didn't see."
Patrick Schwarzenegger
Cyrus and actor Patrick Schwarzenegger, the eldest son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, dated from November 2014 to April 2015.
The two were first spotted together at a Halloween event in L.A. with a group of friends. A few weeks later, the couple were seen kissing at a University of Southern California football game. At the time, Schwarzenegger was studying business at USC.

In March 2015, photos surfaced of The Staircase actor spending time with another woman while on vacation in Mexico. Schwarzenegger quickly set the record straight on X (formerly Twitter). "Omg. It's one of my best friend's girlfriends," he wrote. "Would NEVER do anything against my GF."
The pair reportedly hit a rough patch after Schwarzenegger's vacation. "Miley is embarrassed about the photos and Patrick is devastated about that because he really cares about her," a source told PEOPLE.
Although the couple went on dates following the incident, they amicably called it quits in April. "They're just in two different places in their lives," a source told PEOPLE. "He's in college and she's focused on her music and career."
Stella Maxwell
In 2015, the "Midnight Sky" singer briefly dated Victoria's Secret model Stella Maxwell after being introduced by a mutual friend. They were first seen together in June 2015 when they met over drinks in New York City.
While Cyrus and Maxwell never confirmed their romance, they often appeared on each other's Instagram pages. In July 2015, the couple were spotted kissing while Cyrus was on break from filming a music video.
The fling fizzled out by summer's end, and Cyrus told Elle UK in September that she wasn't looking for a relationship.
"I'm 22, I'm going on dates, but I change my style every two weeks, let alone who I'm with," she told the outlet. "Stella's awesome, but as soon as you hang out with someone, you get labeled as in a relationship. And I'm like, you can't just assume that everyone I'm sitting at dinner with is a date."
Kaitlynn Carter
In August 2019, Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter, star of The Hills: New Beginnings, were seen kissing in Italy — just hours before Cyrus confirmed her split from Hemsworth. A source told PEOPLE that Cyrus and Carter had mutual friends and were "just having fun" together.
Carter supported Cyrus backstage at the 2019 VMAs, where the singer performed her breakup ballad "Slide Away." Later that night, the pair were spotted holding hands on the way to an N.Y.C. nightclub.
In early September, the couple donned matching outfits on dates in N.Y.C. and in L.A., including a lunch date with Cyrus' mom Tish Cyrus.
Cyrus and Carter split by the end of the month. "Miley doesn't want a serious relationship," a source told PEOPLE at the time. "She and Kaitlynn spent every day together and it just wasn't anything that Miley wanted to continue doing. She wants to focus on her career. It wasn't an easy decision, but this is ultimately what she wants."
Cody Simpson
Cyrus and longtime friend Cody Simpson first hinted at a romance in October 2019 when they were spotted kissing at an L.A. grocery store. The same month, the Australian singer visited Cyrus in the hospital while she recovered from tonsillitis — Simpson even serenaded her with the song he wrote for her, "Golden Thing."
A few days later, Simpson confirmed his romance with Cyrus at an event in L.A. "I'm very happy. We are very, very happy," he told reporters. "She's creative. She's very passionate about what she does, and I'm very similar in that sense. That's why we get along so well."
He added: "The reason why it hasn't been a really crazy sudden thing is just because we've been friends for so long. [We] found each other again in a space where we're both not partying, working real hard, and it just keeps things healthy and it's good."
Throughout their relationship, the pair posted several PDA-filled selfies and even got tattoos together. After Simpson spent the holidays with the Cyrus family, the couple began working on music together, although their work was never released.
After 10 months of dating, in August 2020, Cyrus and Simpson called it quits. He reflected on the breakup on The Kyle & Jackie O Show two years later. "It was kind of a mutual decision between us, knowing that we were sort of going in different directions in our life," Simpson said. "It was kind of a fork in the road kind of scenario, really."
Maxx Morando
Cyrus was first linked to Maxx Morando, drummer for the band Liily, in December 2021.
The singer posted a photo with Morando in November 2021 at a Gucci fashion show, but rumors of a relationship didn't spark until the following month when the pair held hands and danced together backstage during Cyrus' NBC special Miley's New Year's Eve Party.

By May 2022, Morando had met Cyrus' mother Tish, who accompanied the couple to see Pamela Anderson star in the musical Chicago on Broadway.
A year later, the "Flowers" singer opened up about how she met Morando. "We got put on a blind date," Cyrus told British Vogue. "Well, it was blind for me and not really for him. I thought, 'The worst that can happen is I leave.' "
The pair are now involved in each other's careers. Morando helped to produce two songs on Cyrus' 2023 album Endless Summer Vacation and celebrated the release on Instagram.
When Cyrus won her first Grammy in early 2024, she was photographed kissing Morando at their table and gave him a sweet shout-out in her acceptance speech. "Everyone that's standing on this stage right now ... Our teams, my team, Crush, Columbia, my mommy, my sister, my love," she said from the stage.
