Mipcom: Turner’s Cartoon Network Latin America to Develop ‘The Legend of Zeta & Ozz,’ with Trio of Chilean Animators (EXCLUSIVE)
CANNES — Turner’s Cartoon Network Latin America announced Monday morning that it has obtained the services of three Chilean animation studios: Punk Robot, Ni?o Viejo and Typpo, for a new series of shorts titled “The Legend of Zeta & Ozz,” which will broadcast across all of its platforms.
At last year’s Academy Awards, Punk Robot became the first Latin American animation company and the first Chilean company in any category to win an Oscar for their short film “Bear Story.” Punk Robot specializes in high-end animated content and is responsible for the creation of animated series such as “Flipos,” and “The Adventures of Muelin and Perlita.”
Via a state, ent, Pato Escala, executive producer of Punkrobot Studio said: “This project is a great challenge for us and we are happy to have Cartoon Network Latin America’s creative support. We want to develop a project that will make Latin American animation proud around the world.”
Ni?o Viejo specializes in 2D animation and has worked on various TV series and short films. Most recently the company worked on the stop motion short film “Sing with Meaning: A Violeta Parra Biography,” whose director, Leo Beltrán, will be acting as project director on “The Legend of Zeta & Ozz.”
“We are working nowadays for boys and girls. The series is fast, it moves in different spaces, it is not predictable, and it has the spirit of comic-books both in the storytelling and its characters. The general art is based on palettes of highly-defined colors,” said Beltrán.
Focusing on scriptwriting specifically for animation, Typpo have worked with various studios around the world, all while maintaining their own catalog of original projects.
The new series tells the story of a friendship between an egotistic fox and a childish, yet enthusiastic bear. The pair share a dream of being idealized and only ever want to have fun. However, their ambitions of becoming well-recognized legends always seem to come up short.
“‘The Legend of Zeta & Ozz,’ seeks to tell a story that, while superficially about competitiveness, ego-centrism and giving out nicknames, deep down it’s about two best friends who do whatever it takes to have fun together,”said Bambü Orellana, scriptwriter of the project.
Hernán La Greca, senior director of original production for Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Tooncast Latin America commented: “We are thrilled to work on this new project with talented people that put so much love in the product. This new co-production in Chile confirms our ongoing commitment to foster local animation in Latin America.”
