Is Kim Burgess Coming Back to Chicago P.D.?
Burgess’ absence has definitely been felt this season, with many left wondering if Squerciati will return or if she’s leaving the show.
In Chicago P.D. Season 12 Episode 1, Burgess was away at a policing conference and she’s still there in Episode 2. Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) noted that Burgess was considering leaving early because “she’s disturbed by our caseload,” but Emily Martel (Victoria Cartagena) said she should stay because it might “give her a leg up” in the Intelligence Unit.
In the second episode, Burgess calls Ruzek but as he’s trying to find Martel’s killer and doesn’t want to tell her the news, he screens her call. “She knows Martel, we’ve been friends a long time,” Ruzek tells Officer Kiana Cook (Toya Turner). “I just can’t. Not yet.”
Burgess will finally return to Chicago P.D. for Episode 3, titled “Off Switch.” In a September 30 Instagram post, Squerciati confirmed her return to the show. When a fan commented, “WHY WERE YOU NOT IN THE FIRST EP OF THE NEW SEASON KIM?!!!!! You’re my fav person!!!!!!!!,” the actor responded, “I’m okay! See you in episode 3.”
Another fan noted, “We have missed you!! Your man has been on fire the last two episodes!!”
Given that Ruzek is left shaken by Martel’s death, Burgess’ return in the third episode will give her the chance to comfort him.

She responded, “STAWP ??.”
Another fan commented, “So glad it’s back!! Excited for tonight. Why is Kim not in the first 2 episodes? I love everyone on the show but Kim’s my favorite!”
Squerciati confirmed, “I’ll be back. I’m not in the first two episodes!”

Of course, there’s a Burgess and Ruzek wedding on the horizon and fans are eagerly awaiting that big moment. In a September 25 interview with TV Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan gave an update on what’s ahead for the couple.
“What we want to do is show an authentic long-term relationship. They’re getting married and they are each other’s person. They’re each other’s kind of foundation and rock and sounding board,” she explained. “We’ll have the wedding in sort of the later end of the season, but until then, we will always get to see them coming back together as a family unit and dealing with problems as couples do.”
Sigan continued, “It’s not easy necessarily, but the two of them are now looking at it from a focus of, what’s good for our family, what’s good for the pair of us. It was fun to remember that they’re two separate people still so all their stories don’t need to be about them as a couple and they’re going through a lot independently and they still deal with it all together, but we see independent parts of their identity and who they are and also how it transforms this year when new opportunities arise for both of them and how that affects them in ways as a family unit, but also just as independent people.”
