Monk takes on his last case in a new movie premiering on Peacock
Over a decade since the latest installment of “Monk,” Tony Shalhoub will reprise his role as Adrian Monk in “Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.”
Monk is a former homicide detective whose storylines on the show include him consulting on cases for the San Francisco Police Department. He developed obsessive-compulsive disorder after his wife was murdered and the show depicted him grappling with grief and his condition.
“Monk” ran from 2002 to 2009 and won eight Primetime Emmy Awards, according to IMDb.
The original series’ creative team of Andy Breckman, David Hoberman and Randy Zisk created and wrote this new “Monk” movie. “In coming back, we wanted to do a film that was worthy of our legacy,” the trio said in a statement to Variety. “‘Mr. Monk’s Last Case’ is a story that is powerful, emotional, funny, heartwarming, and has something to say about the human condition.”
“Monk has been a big part of my life for the last 10 or 12 years, and the character that I’m proudest of probably in my career. I was always hoping for a chance to revisit him the way you would want to revisit an old friend,” Breckman told Entertainment Weekly.
‘Mr. Monk’s Last Case’ plot
The new movie takes place after the COVID-19 pandemic ended. “The pandemic threw Monk — and me and you everyone reading this — for a huge loop, and he was suddenly back at square one,” Breckman said to Entertainment Weekly. “So the movie finds Monk in a pretty dark place, and he’s back in a hole that he has to try to dig out of emotionally.”
The plot of the new movie centers around Monk’s attempt to solve his last case — his stepdaughter Molly’s fiancé is murdered, per Entertainment Weekly.
The movie is expected to combine what the world looks like now with some familiar elements of “Monk.” “It’s been twelve years since the world has seen a fresh installment of ‘Monk.’ The world has changed mightily in those intervening years and Monk 2023 reflects the changing world,” Breckman, Hoberman and Zisk said in a statement to Deadline.
“When people ask me what the original series was about, I always say it was about loss. It was Monk dealing with the loss of his beloved wife, Trudy,” Breckman told Entertainment Weekly. “And that, of course, we solved in the series finale. But the movie presents Monk with an equally emotional challenge that he has to step up and address. We found a way to raise the stakes yet again for this poor guy.”

Other original cast members like Traylor Howard (Natalie Teeger), Melora Hardin (Trudy), Jason Gray-Stanford (Randy Disher), Ted Levine (Leland Stottlemeyer) and Hector Elizondo (Dr. Neven) will return with Shalhoub in this new movie, per Deadline.
