Vice Is Broke had its world premiere opening the Documentary section at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. The film examines the rise and fall of Vice Media, which filed for bankruptcy in June 2023 after once being valued in the billions. Huang, who previously hosted Huang’s World for Vice, offers a first-person account of the company’s trajectory, blending cultural analysis with an exploration of the corporate and personal ramifications of its collapse.
“I was part of a cultural movement at Vice that was sold out from under us,” Huang said in a statement. “There are a lot of companies that took cultural movements from the ’90s, raised insane amounts of money against them, only to sell them off piece by piece as valuations tumbled. Vice Is Broke paints a portrait depicting the true costs of selling out — from cultural devastation to corporate failures, but perhaps most importantly, the personal betrayals.”
The documentary is produced by QC Entertainment, the production company behind Get Out and BlacKkKlansman, alongside Huang’s Cash Only and Maya Rodrigo. Huang is represented by WME and M88.
Mubi will unveil release plans in the coming months.
